The Miami Central Rockets escaped Otis Gray Jr. Memorial Stadium with a 35-20 victory over the Dillard Panthers on Friday night in a Class 6A regional quarterfinal. The Rockets face District 16 champion Carol City next week. The Panthers lost in the first round at home for the fourth consecutive year to a District 16 school.
Miami Central(9-2) went up 6-0 at the 9:32 mark of the first quarter. Quarterback Maurice Underwood angled through the right side of the line and scored from one yard away.
Dillard(8-3) defensive back Omari Hill intercepted a long pass to the left side intended for wide receiver Anthony Colonel early in the second quarter. They finished their ensuing drive when quarterback Tyrese McConn connected a 50-yard touchdown pass up the middle at 10:19 for a 7-6 lead.
The Rockets answered back quickly with 8:17 to go. Running back Lexington Joseph swept to the left side and reached the end zone from 28 yards out.
Rockets defensive back Darius Conley would pick off a pass near midfield on the Panthers next possession. Miami Central extended their lead to 21-6 with three minutes remaining. Wide receiver Jaylin Young capped the drive with an 18-yard pass reception from Underwood.
The Panthers made it competitive again with 1:31 left in the first half and they trailed 21-14. McConn fired a 19-yard pass to wide receiver Lamont Scott in the back left corner of the end zone.
There was only one scoring play during the third quarter. Underwood threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Young on the left side at 6:09 for a 14-point margin.
In the fourth quarter, Dillard closed the gap to 28-20 at the 9:18 mark. Running back Method Bradley caught a short pass to the right on a circle pattern and raced untouched for a 12-yard touchdown.
The Rockets put the game away with 7:06 remaining. Underwood made a shovel pass to Joseph and he sprinted through the middle from 15 yards away for his second touchdown of the contest.
