The Florida Panthers returned home after a three-game road trip and lost to the Colorado Avalanche 5-4 in overtime on Friday night at BB&T Center. The Panthers extended their point streak to four games. The Avalanche are in the middle of a season-long, six-game road trip.
Florida(2-2-3) rocketed out to a 3-1 after one period. Jonathan Huberdeau got his second goal of the season at 3:32 and Frank Vatrano followed with a shorthanded goal at the 8:26 mark for a 2-0 lead.
The Avs briefly stopped the momentum midway through the frame at 10:57. Former Panthers Joonas Donskoi powered his third goal of the campaign. The Cats regained a two-goal lead exactly four minutes later as Huberdeau placed in his second goal of the contest.
There was barrage of goals during the second part of the second period. Colorado(6-0-1) connected on two goals in 32 seconds to tie the contest 3-3. Matt Nieto scored at 11:23 and Andre Burakovsky evened it up at 11:55.
Brett Connolly continued his hot streak as he scored his third goal in two games for the Panthers with 5:55 left in the second. Colorado answered back just 16 seconds later when Burakovsky scored for the second time.
After a scoreless third period, the Avalanche got the game-winning tally in overtime. Nathan MacKinnon nailed his fourth goal of the season at 3:03 on assists from Burakovsky and Samuel Girard.
