The Florida Panthers overcame the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 in overtime at Pepsi Center on Wednesday night. It was a league-leading sixth time this season that the Cats reached overtime. The Panthers finished off a four-game road trip and play the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday in Sunrise.
Colorado(8-2-2) got a 1-0 lead at 6:05 of the first period. Matt Calvert took a wrist shot from the top left circle which was knocked down in front. Pierre Edourd-Bellemare flicked a shot that was saved, however Matt Nieto poked in the rebound by Sergei Bobrovsky from the center of the crease.
The game was tied midway through the first by Florida(6-3-4) at 9:59. MacKenzie Weegar sent a cross-ice pass from the left point to the right point. Aaron Ekblad released a wrist shot that was redirected by Colton Sceviour past Philipp Grubauer for his first goal of the season.
The Avalanche reclaimed the lead 2-1 with 31.4 seconds remaining in the period. Nathan MacKinnon snapped a shot from the top of the zone that was saved. Former Panther Joonas Donskoi whacked in the rebound from the blue paint.
In the third period, the Avs made it 3-1 at the 7:37 mark. MacKinnon scored his seventh goal of the year on assists from Ian Cole and Nazem Kadri.
The Panthers moved it to a one-goal margin with 7:56 remaining while on the power play. Mike Hoffman fed a pass from the blue line across to Keith Yandle. His slapshot from the left point was deflected in by Aleksander Barkov from the low slot for his first goal of the campaign.
The Cats pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and tied the contest 3-3 with 1:30 left. Ekblad angled a pass to his left and Jonathan Huberdeau zipped a snap shot from on top of the left circle for a goal.
Florida won the game in overtime. Barkov pushed a lead pass from the slot area ahead and Huberdeau placed in a backhand shot from the crease for the game-winning goal just 29 seconds in.
