The Deerfield Beach Bucks travel south to Dade County and face the Columbus Explorers on Friday afternoon at Tropical Park in a Class 8A state semifinal. It is a rematch of the state semifinal last year where the Explorers topped the Bucks 49-21 in Deerfield Beach. This is the first state semifinal to be played in South Florida this week.
Deerfield Beach(10-3) have won five straight games and compiled five shutouts this season. They have outscored their last 11 opponents 478-74. The Bucks pounded Palm Beach Lakes 53-9 in the regional quarterfinal, downed Palm Beach Lakes 44-6 in the regional semifinal and defeated Vero Beach 35-7 in the regional final last week. Michael Pratt is expected start at quarterback and Derohn King can back him up. Running back Jaylan Knighton and Jaziun Patterson will get their rushing attempts from the backfield. Pratt can connect passes to wide receivers Deajaun McDougle, Xavier Restrepo, Bryce Gowdy, Alex Henningham and Deltavian Jenkins.
Columbus(9-4) have outscored their opponents 190-70 during their five-game winning streak. The 2018 Class 8A state finalist will be hosting their fourth playoff game. They stopped Coral Gables 50-14 in a regional quarterfinal, stomped Miami 35-2 in a regional semifinal and beat Western 36-21 in a regional final. Running back Henry Bryant Jr. will lead the Explorers offense with their rushing attack. Their slew of wide receivers that consists of Xzavier Henderson, Trynyty Conway, Christopher Gilbert, Jahvar McSween and Ken Moore can make pass receptions down the field from quarterback Brandon McDuffey.
