The Champagnat Catholic Lions defeated the Victory Christian Academy Storm 35-14 for the FHSAA Class 2A championship on Thursday night at Gene Cox Stadium in Tallahassee. The Lions captured their second state title in the last three years and got to the state title game for the fourth consecutive season.
Victory Christian Academy(11-2) jumped out to a 7-0 lead at 6:29 of the first quarter. Quarterback Jeremiah Byrd sprinted down the left side from 23 yards away.
Champagnat Catholic(10-3) answered back quickly on their next possession and scored with 4:24 left in the first. Running back Donovan Jones caught a 10-yard touchdown screen pass to the left from quarterback Ryle Aguila. Everett Bradley would get into the end zone on a two-point conversion run to give them an 8-7 lead.
In the second quarter, the Lions increased their lead to 15-7 at the 7:58 mark. Aguila connected a 69-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Malik Rutherford. Eathan Moncada added a 28-yard field goal with 2:32 to go in the first half.
Moncada booted another 28-yard field goal at 5:54 in the third quarter for a 14-point lead. Champagnat Catholic made it 28-7 on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Aguila to wide receiver Johnquai Lewis with 3:42 left in the third.
The Storm cut the deficit to 28-14 with 4:09 left in the fourth quarter. Running back Cornelius Shaw rushed around the right end from 16 yards out.
The Lions capped it with 1:32 remaining in the contest. They got a one-yard run from running back Calvin Montgomery off-left tackle for a 35-14 lead.
