The Miami Central Rockets face the Escambia Gators in the FHSAA Class 6A state title game on Thursday night. It is being held at Daytona Stadium in Daytona Beach.
Miami Central(11-3), who are on a four-game win streak, have scored at least 32 points in every victory this season. The team has compiled two shutouts in their last four games. They hosted Dunbar in the regional quarterfinal and shut them out 38-0. The Rockets went on the road as they upset Naples 56-23 in the regional semifinal, blanked Dillard 35-0 in the regional final and got by Palmetto 34-30 in the state semifinal. Running backs Kejon Owens, Amari Daniels and Juan Henry will get their share of rushing opportunities from the backfield. Quarterback Katravis Marsh can find wide receivers Shamar Zaragoza, Chamon Metayer, Geovanni Ribalta and Yulkeith Brown down the field on passing attempts.
Undefeated Escambia(14-0) has outscored their opponents 535-138 this season and shut out four teams this year. The Gators have rolled through in their four home playoff contests. They bashed New Smyrna Beach 44-0 in the regional quarterfinal, defeated Mainland 27-7 in the regional semifinal, outscored Lee 39-13 in the regional final and beat Gaither 45-21 in the state semifinal. Running back Frank Peasant will be given the majority of carries followed by Decoveny Shine and Deyonte Betties. Quarterback A.V. Smith can run out of the pocket and pass to wide receivers D.T. Gideon, Tony Broadnax, Jojo Blackmon and Chris Hale.
