Former Miami sportscaster Jesse Agler has been elevated to lead radio play-by-play announcer of the San Diego Padres. Ted Leitner announced his retirement after 41 seasons of broadcasting with the club and will become a team ambassador. Agler will continue to fill in as the Padres television voice on Fox Sports San Diego when Don Orsillo has a national broadcast baseball assignment.
He has hosted the one-hour evening program Padres Social Hour on KWFN-FM since April 2020. Agler did host the same show on the internet in 2014 and 2015.
Agler, a Spanish River High School and University of Miami grad, began broadcasting locally at 560 WQAM-AM as a sports anchor and later was promoted to morning sports anchor. He was named the Florida Panthers studio host prior to the 2005-06 NHL season. Agler added duties as a studio host on the Florida Marlins Radio Network.
He lost both positions when the radio rights for both teams were acquired by Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM. Agler jumped over to The Ticket and worked there as a weekend sports anchor for several months. He returned to WQAM as a sports anchor and became the studio host of the Miami Hurricanes Radio Network for a couple of years.
Agler joined Clear Channel Miami in early 2010 as a morning sports anchor at News Radio 610 WIOD-AM and later handled the sports anchoring position at 940 WINZ-AM. He was named the The Finsiders Show program afternoon host on WINZ. Agler was elevated to pregame and halftime studio host of the Miami Dolphins Radio Network in July 2010.
He replaced Dick Stockton as the Miami Dolphins television announcer on preseason games in 2013. The first hour of The Finsiders Show was simulcasted on Fox Sports Florida starting in September 2013.
Agler departed South Florida in January 2014 and joined the San Diego Padres. He began as an internet studio host, San Diego Padres Radio Network studio host and backup radio play-by-play announcer. Agler began to work primarily as a San Diego Padres radio play-by-play announcer in 2016 and occasionally fill in as the Padres television play-by-play announcer on Fox Sports San Diego.
