The Miami Marlins beat the San Diego Padres 9-3 at loanDepot park on Sunday. The Marlins and Padres split the four-game weekend series. Both clubs have Monday off as the Marlins go to Baltimore while the Padres return back to the west coast.
San Diego(58-54) scored first for the fourth straight game in this series. Pham got to first on a fielding error by first baseman Jesus Aguilar and raced around to third. He would score on a base hit by American Heritage High School grad Eric Hosmer through the right side to give them a 1-0 advantage in the opening frame.
Another American Heritage High School grad helped Miami(43-57) tie it up 1-1 in the bottom of the third. Deven Marrero sliced a solo homer down the right-field line on a 2-2 count. It was the first home run for Marrero in the majors since September 20, 2017 with the Boston Red Sox.
The Padres regained the lead during the top of the fourth inning. Brito Miami Private School grad Manny Machado lined a solo home run over the center-field fence on a 0-1 pitch. It was the 17th homer of the season for Machado.
The Marlins answered back in the bottom of the fourth to even it up 2-2. Brian Anderson homered the ball barely over the right-field wall on a 1-2 pitch for his fourth home run of the campaign.
In the fifth inning, the Fish pulled ahead 4-2. Magneuris Sierra doubled down the left-field line and Marrero reached home. It was Sierra's first run batted in this year. Starling Marte came up next and drove in Sierra on a single through the right side.
Miami added five more runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 9-2 lead and a seven-run cushion. Sandy Leon knocked in Adam Duvall and Anderson with a double into the right-field corner. After Marrero singled up the middle, Lewis Brinson powered a three-run homer on a 0-1 count to left field for his third home run of the season.
The Friars picked up a meaningless run in the ninth inning. Brian O'Grady got his second home run of the season on a 1-2 pitch to right field.
