Leyland became the first Marlins manager to lead the franchise to a world championship. He led the organization to the 1997 World Series during his first season with the team and guided them to a seven-game series win over the Cleveland Indians. It happened in the fifth season of existence for the club, which at one time was a Major League Baseball record.
He helped the Pittsburgh Pirates win three consecutive National League East Division titles from 1990 to 1992. Leyland won the American League pennant with the Detroit Tigers in 2006 and 2012.
