The Florida Panthers finished a four-game road trip with a 2-1 overtime loss to the newly named Arizona Coyotes on Saturday night at Gila River Arena. Both teams will meet again in Sunrise on Thursday night. The Panthers have earned at least one point in all five road games this season.
Neither team scored during the first two periods. Florida(2-2-3) broke the tie at 1:47 of the third period. The Coyotes committed a turnover behind their cage and the Cats capitalized. Tomas Fleischmann carried the puck to right of the net and passed in front to Brandon Pirri. He faked a forehand shot in the low slot and scored on the backhand around Mike Smith for a Panthers 1-0 lead.
Arizona(3-3-1) evened the game at 9:51 on the power play as Justin Hodgman picked up his first NHL goal in his National Hockey League debut. A Keith Yandle slapshot from the blue line was deflected by Lauri Korpikoski in front and saved by Roberto Luongo. Hodgman pounced on the rebound and put it in from close range.
The Coyotes got a man advantage in overtime when Aleksander Barkov was called for high sticking at 1:25. They scored on the power play at 2:20 when Sam Gagner passed the puck from the low left circle to Oliver Ekman-Larsson on the top left circle. He fired a shot by the left glove of Luongo for the win.
