Miami Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM has let go sports talk host Miko Grimes. She was arrested this past Sunday at Sun Life Stadium as the Miami Dolphins took on the Buffalo Bills. She is the wife of Miami Dolphins defensive back Brent Grimes.
Grimes began to appear as a guest on several WQAM shows during the 20l4 NFL season. She was hired as a sports host earlier this year and began to co-host a weekend show with South Florida Sun-Sentinel Miami Dolphins beat writer Omar Kelly. Her last show at the station was on September 26. Grimes had no broadcasting experience prior to joining WQAM.
I regret the circumstances under which Ms. Grimes was released from WQAM. I have always viewed her as vain, egotistical, & narcissistic; her sports “analysis” is intellectually-vapid, & her opinions are typically self-serving & vacuous. Omar Kelly is one of the few hosts on the “Q” who works well without a host (i.e., a “sidekick”); sadly, the “Omar and Miko Show” quickly devolved into inane weekend “filler” devoid of substantive content. Instead, reality television & social media commentary “trumped” real (or at least interesting) sports talk. Mr. Kelly’s obsequiousness towards Ms. Grimes made for much nauseating radio content; sycophancy is no substitute for on-air radio chemistry. While I certainly will not miss her presence on WQAM, nonetheless I wish that Ms. Grimes’ prickly personality & sense of entitlement had not sabotaged her own short-lived radio career in Miami. Perhaps she will eventually learn from her mistakes, receive another on-air opportunity, & engage listeners with interesting & informed analyses (versus a show where flattery & self-interests prevail).
ReplyDeleteI agree with your analysis of Miko Grimes.
DeleteThanks. I wish that particular dismissal alone could "fix" WQAM. The "Q's" takeover / annexation by CBS has completely ruined the station. Promos run ad nausea while too many commercials undercut programing content. WQAM used to fill a unique niche in South Florida – a semi-independent station filled with quirky radio personalities & passable producers. The result? Consistently-poor ratings. Now, the station’s nothing more than a CBS drone, while internal dysfunction & piss-poor production reign. Funny – all these “improvements” to WQAM have not translated into higher ratings (surprise?). Stop listening to live programing & playback the podcasts instead (until CBS locks them behind a pay-wall).
