The Booker T. Washington Tornadoes knocked off the American Heritage Patriots 27-7 in a preseason kickoff classic at Heritage Field on Friday night. The Tornadoes are the defending four-time FHSAA Class 4A state champions and open their regular season hosting the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders next week.
Neither school scored in the first quarter. Both teams loss the ball on downs during their first possessions of the contest. Booker T. Washington blocked a 30-yard field goal attempt by Zack Thomson with 2:01 to go in the first.
The Tornadoes got the only points in the second quarter and were up 7-0. Wide receiver Quanvon Beckford fumbled the ball away at the end of a 58-yard reception. Two plays later, American Heritage quarterback Jason Brown scrambled out of the pocket and threw a pass to the right sideline. The ball was intercepted by defensive back Rishard Dames and he returned it 25 yards for a touchdown.
Booker T. Washington pulled away from the Patriots in the second half. Running back Craig Nelson finished a six-play drive with a five-yard run up the middle at 10:21 of the third to make it 14-0. Running back Marcus Barthell caught an eight-yard pass from quarterback Daniel Richardson down the left sideline for a score and a 20-point cushion with 5:38 remaining in the quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, they went on a 4th-and-10 at the Patriots 34-yard line. Richardson fired the ball up the middle and wide receiver Deandre Williams pulled in a reception for a touchdown to increase the Tornadoes lead to 27-0 with 10:09 left.
