It was national signing day for all high school football players in Broward County on Wednesday. They will get the opportunity to show off their talent playing college football. Some of them have won state championships and district titles while at the high school level.
The school that had the most commitments in the local region came from St. Thomas Aquinas. They have won the last three consecutive FHSAA Class 7A state titles. The large amount of their offense includes quarterback Jake Allen as he selected Florida along with running back Mike Epstein who signed with Illinois and running back Kyshaun Allen going to Iowa. The wide receiver core had Trevon Grimes go to Ohio State, Mike Harley to Miami, Joshua Palmer to Tennessee, Jordan Merrell to FAU and Jonathan Moore to Kent State.
Their defense has linebacker Tyler Dunning going to Mississippi State, defensive tackle Kivon Bennett to Tennessee, defensive end Leshawn Paulino-Bell to Michigan State and linebacker Drew White to Notre Dame. Offensive lineman Kedonis Haslem, son of Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem decided to attend Toledo.
American Heritage captured the Class 5A championship last year and have won three state titles in the last four years. They have their share of players heading to the next level. Offensive lineman Tedarrell Slaton went with Florida, offensive tackle Kai-Leon Herbert headed for Miami and defensive back Marco Wilson along with linebacker James Houston selected Florida.
Alabama was able to recruit two local players with wide receiver Jerry Jeudy from Deerfield Beach and defensive back Daniel Wright from Boyd Anderson. Wright is the younger brother of Major Wright who once played football for St. Thomas Aquinas and Florida. Deerfield Beach wide receiver Leroy Henley moves on to East Carolina and wide receiver Daewood Davis heads to Oregon.
Flanagan defensive back Stanford Samuels decided to attend Florida State. His teammate wide receiver Clevan Thomas leaves for Kentucky. Both helped the Falcons win their first state football title in 2015.
Dillard have two players moving to the next level. Defensive end Jordan Wright heads to Kentucky while defensive tackle Jonathan Ford goes to Miami.
Chaminade-Madonna got to the Class 3A state title game in 2016. Running back Shaun Shivers lands at Auburn, wide receiver Joshua Ali goes to Kentucky and quarterback Henry Columbi picked Utah State.
