The Piper Bengals head for Brian Piccolo Stadium in Fort Lauderdale to play the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders on Friday night. Both squads made the FHSAA playoffs last year.
Piper(0-1) finished as the runner-up to Deerfield Beach in District 11 of Class 6A last season and lost to Flanagan in a regional quarterfinal. After being held scoreless for almost four quarters until the final play against Palm Beach Gardens in a three-way kickoff classic, the Bengals lost their season opener to Norland 43-0 last week. Quarterback Derohn King looks to dictate the offense for them. Running backs Jacari Ponder and Jamarquez Thomas will get the bulk of the carries for the team. King intends to connect with wide receivers Nathaniel Stubbs, Zachary Sewell, Jalind Williams and Brandon Joseph.
St. Thomas Aquinas(1-0) has captured the last three FHSAA Class 7A state championships including last season when they topped Plant. They have seven state titles since 2007 and ten overall in school history. STA was on national television last week and barely got by St. John Bosco of California 9-3 in overtime. Curt Casteel takes over the quarterback spot for the Raiders. Running backs Daniel Carter and Samuel Llewllyn can gain yards from the backfield. Casteel has several targets to pass to which includes wide receivers Elijah Moore, Tavares Kelly, Teriq Philips and Cole Caterbone.
