Giancarlo Stanton set a franchise record with his 43rd home run to surpass Gary Sheffield for the most home runs in a season by a Marlins player. Miami held on to defeat the San Francisco Giants 8-3 on Monday night at Marlins Park. Sheffield set the franchise mark with 42 home runs back in 1996.
Stanton was able to get the historical homer in the first inning for the Marlins. He smashed a 2-0 pitch over the left-field fence and Dee Gordon scored in front of him.
San Francisco(47-73) put together a three-run rally to take the lead in the top of the third. Denard Span hit a ground-rule double to right field which scored Pablo Sandoval and Kelby Tomlinson. The Giants moved ahead when Hunter Pence drove in Span with a single into left field.
Miami(57-60) tied it up 3-3 in the bottom of the frame. Christian Yelich knocked in Gordon with a base hit to left.
The Fish continued to roll in the fourth inning and regained the lead. Derek Dietrich scored on an infield hit by Gordon. Stanton followed with a single into center field and Miguel Rojas crossed the plate. Marcell Ozuna blasted a solo home run to center on the first pitch in the bottom of the fifth and extended the Marlins lead to 6-3.
In the seventh inning, Miami added two more runs. Ozuna scored on a Tyler Moore base hit into right field. Moore eventually scored on a passed ball when the bases were loaded with Ichiro Suzuki at-bat.
