Giancarlo Stanton hit his 42nd home run of the season to tie the Marlins single-season record with Gary Sheffield as Miami swept the Colorado Rockies 5-3 at Marlins Park on Sunday. Sheffield got 42 homers for the Florida Marlins back in 1996.
Miami(56-60) rolled out to a 2-0 margin in the second inning. Starting pitcher Vance Worley pulled off a two-run single to right field which scored J.T. Realmuto and Tomas Telis.
Colorado(65-52) scrambled back with their only three runs of the contest in the top of the third. Gerardo Parra singled into right-center field and Charlie Blackmon scored. Carlos Gonzalez followed with a base hit up the middle that brought home D.J. LeMahieu and Parra to make it 3-2.
The Marlins tied it up 3-3 in the bottom of the frame. Stanton sliced the ball down the right-field line for a solo home run on a 3-2 pitch. It was his 250th home run of his major league career.
The Fish regained the lead during the fourth inning. Mike Aviles ripped a double past the third-base line and into the left-field corner for a double. Telis and Miguel Rojas both scored on the play for Miami.
