CBS Radio officially merged with Entercom Communications on Friday. It has been a long process that began in February 2017. It had to be approved by the United States Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission.
The merger will have an impact on two of the sports format radio stations in Miami. Both Miami Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM and Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM now have the same owner. In terms of Miami sports format radio stations with a 6+ audience, both have a combined 90% share in ratings for the Miami/Fort Lauderdale market compared to the other local competitor Miami Sports 940 WINZ-AM, which is owned by iHeartMedia, over the last two months.
Entercom will now control most of the local professional sports franchises and local colleges game broadcast rights. WQAM has the Miami Dolphins, Florida Panthers, University of Miami Hurricanes football and basketball. The Ticket has the Miami Heat and Florida International University football.
CBS Radio acquired WQAM from Beasley Broadcasting back in October 2014. They became the first South Florida all-sports radio station in April 1993. Entercom Communications picked up WAXY from Lincoln Financial Media in July 2015. That station flipped to a sports format in August 2004.
