The Chaminade-Madonna Lions easily defeated the American Heritage Stallions 38-0 at Vince Zappone Field in a Class 3A regional semifinal on Friday afternoon. The Lions will host Benjamin in Hollywood next week.
The Lions waited until the final minute of the first quarter to take a 3-0 lead. Daniel Longman blasted a 39-yard field goal with 32.8 seconds to go in the first.
Chaminade-Madonna(8-3) began to put the ball in the end zone during the second quarter. American Heritage backup quarterback John Dunmore fumbled the ball at his own 49-yard line. The Lions capped the drive as quarterback Daelen Menard connected a 16-yard pass to wide receiver Xavier Williams in the middle of the end zone at 6:39 for a 10-point margin.
The Lions began their next possession at the Stallions 28-yard line following a 35-yard punt return by Williams. Several plays later, running back Shaun Shivers ran through the right side of the line for a five-yard touchdown run with 2:09 left in the second for a 17-0 lead.
The third quarter was all Lions as they got the ball first in the second half. Shivers finished the drive as he rushed up the middle and then darted to his left into the end zone for a touchdown from four yards out at the 10:47 mark.
American Heritage(5-5) later had a bad punt and Chaminade-Madonna took over at the Stallions 30-yard line. The Lions finished the drive as Menard found wide receiver Marlin Mayo for a 43-yard touchdown pass on the right hash marks and they extended their lead to 31-0 with 5:29 left in the third.
