The Florida Panthers allowed four goals in the third period as they were routed by the Colorado Avalanche 7-3 at BB&T Center on Saturday night. It was the final game of a three-game home stand for the Cats. They now head out of South Florida to begin a five-game road trip.
Colorado(13-13-2) scored midway through the first period at 10:56 on a goal by Mikko Rantanen. Florida(11-14-4) came back on a tally with three seconds left in the first by Aaron Ekblad on assists by Jonathan Huberdeau and Keith Yandle. Ekblad passed Gord Murphy for third all-time in club history having the most goals by a defenseman with 44 goals.
In the second period, the Panthers took their only lead of the game. Denis Malgin scored at the 4:51 mark with assists from Jamie McGinn and Ian McCoshen to make it 2-1. The Avs would get two goals in a 41-second span from Nathan MacKinnon at 11:26 and Alexander Kerfoot at 12:07.
The Avalanche pulled away in the third scoring twice within a two-minute period. Erik Johnson scored at 11:59 and Colin Wilson scored at 13:42 to give them a 5-2 margin.
Florida closed the gap 23 seconds later on a tally by Huberdeau. The Panthers pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and it did not work. Colorado finished with two empty-net goals by Matt Nieto with 4:01 remaining and Carl Soderberg with 2:20 left in the third period.
