The Florida Panthers were edged by the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 in overtime at United Center on Tuesday night. The Panthers, who played their second game of a five-game road trip, went into overtime for the second straight night.
It took a while until Chicago(12-14-5) scored to go ahead 1-0 with 3:11 left in the first period. Keith Yandle lost the puck along the end wall to Alex DeBrincat. He centered a pass to the crease area where Brandon Saad took a one-time slap shot past James Reimer.
The game was tied up by Florida(15-11-5) with 8:48 to go in the second period. Micheal Haley lifted a high pass from his own end zone to Nick Bjugstad at the Blackhawks blue line. He came in on a breakaway, switched to his backhand and put the puck by Corey Crawford.
In the third period, the Panthers get their first lead of the contest at the 16:07 mark. Vincent Trocheck got a loose puck at the top right circle and connected a cross-ice pass to Jamie McGinn in the left circle. He placed a wrist shot from the low left circle into the Blackhawks cage. Trocheck extended his point streak to six games on the play.
The Blackhawks answered back with 6:02 left in the third to tie it 2-2. DeBrincat sent a lead pass from the neutral zone to Saad on the right wing. He backhanded a pass through the slot to Toews who slapped the puck in for the tally.
Chicago capitalized on a Matheson turnover in the neutral zone to get the victory at 2:24. Artem Anisimov bumped Matheson off the puck and found Patrick Kane alone in front of him. He skated in and scored on a snap shot from the slot for his 11th goal of the season along with the 296th goal of his NHL career.
