Friday Night Football Magazine came up with a FHSAA top 25 preseason list of Florida high school football programs in 2017. All of the teams selected on the list was from Class 8A to Class 3A.
The publication had at three of their top four show up in Orlando for the FHSAA football finals with the exception of #1 St. Thomas Aquinas. They also had four of the their top 10 and six of their top 15 schools projected to make the state championship game in Orlando.
The magazine was correct with #2 Miami Northwestern predicted to win the Class 6A title and #4 American Heritage to capture the Class 5A crown. #3 Cocoa made it to the Class 4A title game where they were upset. They were also right that #10 Armwood would participate in the Class 6A final and fall to Miami Northwestern.
Class 7A high schools that were in the top 15 that reached Orlando for the state title game were #13 Venice and #15 Bartram Trail. Venice was projected to lose to St. Thomas Aquinas in a state semifinal, however they defeated them and captured the Class 7A title one week later. Bartram Trail was predicted to not get by #12 Lakeland or #14 Plant during the playoffs and still went to the state final.
Others in their top 11 list fell short of a state championship game. They included #5 Carol City. #6 Lake Gibson, #7 Miami Central, #8 Trinity Christian Academy, #9 Dwyer and #11 Southridge. None of the teams from #16 to #25 in the preseason list made it to a state semifinal except #23 Naples in Class 6A.
