The Blanche Ely Tigers travel to Fort Lauderdale and take on the Dillard Panthers in the 55th annual Soul Bowl on Saturday night at Otis Gray Jr. Memorial Stadium. The game will not be played at Lockhart Stadium for the second straight season.
The Panthers won the Soul Bowl last year for the first time since 2012. The Tigers won four consecutive contests from 2013 until 2016 and have been victorious in seven of the last nine games against Dillard.
Blanche Ely(1-8) has been through one of their toughest seasons in school history. They won their season opener against Stranahan and are currently on an eight-game losing streak. The Tigers have been outscored 417-66 this season and were shut out last week by district foe St. Thomas Aquinas 58-0.
Dillard(7-2) clinched the District 15 title in Class 6A last week as they blanked Boynton Beach 41-0 last week and they will host a regional quarterfinal game next week. The Panthers lost two of their first three games of the regular season to Booker T. Washington and Cardinal Gibbons. They have bounced back and have won six straight contests.
The Panthers have quarterback Tyrese McConn who can run out of the pocket at anytime and can also pass the ball. His main targets include wide receivers Elijah Black, Sky Louis, Jarvis Lewis and Devaughn Mortimer. Expect running back Leonard Schoultz to get the majority of rushing attempts.
