The 2019 FHSAA football playoffs began this past weekend in South Florida. There were 49 high schools that represented Palm Beach County, Broward County and Dade County.
Eight small schools had the week off because some Class 4A to Class 1A teams received a bye. They included Chaminade-Madonna, University School, Calvary Christian, Westminster Academy, Pahokee, American Heritage, Gulliver Prep and Champagnat Catholic.
Class 8A in Region 3 had #1 Vero Beach bash #8 Boca Raton 42-7 and #5 Treasure Coast shut out #4 Santaluces 40-0. Both teams in the same district will have the anticipated rematch in the regional semifinal. #3 Deerfield Beach routed #6 Palm Beach Gardens 53-9. They will face #2 Palm Beach Central, who outscored #7 Centennial 49-42.
Region 4 in Class 8A saw a couple of blowouts. #1 Miami Palmetto blanked Taravella 68-0 and #2 Columbus beat district rival #7 Coral Gables 50-14. #4 Western topped #5 South Dade 43-20 while #3 Stoneman Douglas had their season ended by #6 Miami 28-3. Miami Palmetto hosts Western and Columbus takes on Miami in the second round.
Class 7A in Region 4 had #1 St. Thomas Aquinas dominate #8 South Broward 52-0 and #5 Plantation upset #4 Hialeah 47-35. Both district rivals will meet again in the regional semifinal. #3 Atlantic won their rematch over #6 Blanche Ely 47-12. #2 McArthur defeated #7 Fort Lauderdale 25-10 and next has Atlantic.
#1 Palm Beach Lakes survived #8 East Lake 32-27 in Region 3. They will host #5 Venice in the next round. #7 Seminole Ridge lost to #2 Mitchell 33-14.
In Class 6A, #2 Dillard blasted #7 Lely 48-6 and next faces #3 Fort Myers. #4 Miami Central shut out #5 Dunbar 38-0 and now makes a long trip to #1 Naples in the regional semifinal.
Class 5A had the top two seeds win with #1 American Heritage dropping #8 Key West 53-15 and #2 Miami Northwestern crushing #7 Stranahan 63-0. There were some surprises in the classification as #6 Killian upended #3 Jensen Beach 6-3 and #5 North Miami Beach beat #4 Cypress Lake 14-7. Killian stays in Dade County versus Miami Northwestern and North Miami Beach heads to American Heritage nest week.
Region 4 in Class 4A had defending Class 5A state champion #3 Cardinal Gibbons defeat #6 Monsignor Pace 56-26 and they will move across Broward County to take on #2 University School. #4 Booker T. Washington topped #5 Carol City 35-14 in a battle between Miami schools. The top seed #1 Gulliver Prep welcomes them in the next round.
There was no local school playing in Region 3. #2 American Heritage hosts #3 Tampa Catholic in the second round.
Class 3A in Region 4 had #6 St. Andrew's play in their first FHSAA playoff game in 45 years and they fell to #3 Somerset Silver Palms 54-7. #5 Edison was able to handle #4 Westminster Christian 33-7. The two schools that got byes in the first round has two-time defending champion #2 Chaminade-Madonna hosting Somerset Silver Palm while #1 Calvary Christian faces Edison in the following round.
Region 3 had one South Florida game as #6 Benjamin outlasted #3 Cardinal Newman 33-16. They will travel to #2 Bishop Verot next week.
#5 Miami Christian stopped #4 Neumann 34-24 in the opening round of Class 2A and advanced to face #1 Champagnat Catholic. #2 Westminster Academy had a bye and will welcome #6 Moore Haven in the regional semifinal.
The only local high school in Class 1A had a bye. #2 Pahokee will host #3 Hawthorne in the next round.
