The regional finals of the 2019 FHSAA playoffs were played this past weekend. There were 15 South Florida high schools that entered the third round and nine advanced to the state semifinals.
Class 8A in Region 3 saw #3 Deerfield Beach go on the road and take down #1 Vero Beach 35-7. #2 Columbus was able to handle #4 Western 36-21 in the regional final in Region 4. It will be a rematch of the state semifinal from last year, except Deerfield Beach will head south to face Columbus at Tropical Park.
Class 7A in Region 4 had #1 St. Thomas Aquinas blank #3 Atlantic 26-0. STA will take on Venice for the fourth consecutive season in the state semifinal. They will host the contest for the third time in the last four years.
In Region 4 of Class 6A, #4 Miami Central went to Fort Lauderdale and shut out #2 Dillard 35-0 in the regional final. They now have to travel north and challenge Palmetto in the state semifinal.
It was a clash between the top two seeds in Class 5A in Region 4. #2 Miami Northwestern edged #1 American Heritage 23-20 in Plantation in the regional final. They will host Jeuit at Traz Powell Stadium next week.
#4 Booker T. Washington found a way to pull off a 31-21 road victory over #3 Cardinal Gibbons in the Region 4 final of Class 4A. They travel out of town and take on Lakewood in the state semifinal.
Class 3A in Region 4 had a battle for the regional final. #2 Chaminade-Madonna dropped #1 Calvary Christian 35-0 and next week hosts the state semifinal against Clearwater Central Catholic.
#1 Champagnat Catholic continued to roll in Region 4 of Class 2A. They slammed #6 Moore Haven 42-0 and will be at home in the state semifinal against Seffner Christian.
The only local South Florida team from the start in Class 1A in Region 4 advanced as #2 Pahokee got by #5 Chiefland 32-27 in the regional final. They make a long trip for the state semifinal and challenge Madison County.
