The second round of the 2019 FHSAA football playoffs happened this past weekend. There were 29 South Florida high schools entering the regional semifinals and 15 moved to the next round.
Class 8A in Region 3 had #1 Vero Beach survive against district rival #5 Treasure Coast 22-12. #3 Deerfield Beach went on the road and dropped #2 Palm Beach Lakes 44-6. They will make the long trip up I-95 and face Vero Beach at the Citrus Bowl next week.
Region 4 had a shock as #1 Miami Palmetto was upset by #4 Western 21-19. #2 Columbus bashed #6 Miami 35-2 and will host the first regional final in South Florida on Thursday at Tropical Park.
Class 7A in Region 4 saw #1 St. Thomas Aquinas dismantle district rival #5 Plantation 59-19. #3 Atlantic will make another trip to Broward County next week as they edged #2 McArthur 13-7.
The last South Florida high school lost in the Region 3 regional semifinal. #5 Venice reached its fourth consecutive regional final with a 62-35 victory over #1 Palm Beach Lakes.
It will be a South Florida regional final in Class 6A next week when Miami Central heads up to Dillard. #4 Miami Central downed #1 Naples 56-23 while #2 Dillard barely got by #3 Fort Myers 35-30.
There were no surprises in Class 5A. #1 American Heritage blanked #5 North Miami Beach 44-0. The two-time defending Class 6A state champion #2 Miami Northwestern slammed #6 Miami Killian 47-3.
The two top seeds in Class 4A in Region 4 both lost at home. #4 Booker T. Washington slipped by #1 Gulliver Prep 34-31 while the defending Class 5A champion #3 Cardinal Gibbons overcame #2 University School 35-17.
The last local school was eliminated in Region 3. #2 American Heritage lost to #3 Tampa Catholic 33-16.
Class 3A in Region 4 had the two-time defending champion #2 Chaminade-Madonna blast #3 Somerset Silver Palms 56-0. The team will go to #1 Calvary Christian as they topped #5 Edison 14-7.
There will be no local representatives in the Region 3 regional final. #6 Benjamin fell to #2 Bishop Verot 24-7.
In Class 2A, the defending state champion #1 Champagnat Catholic handled #5 Miami Christian 35-7. They will host #6 Moore Haven, who knocked off Westminster Academy 32-12
Class 1A saw the only team from the South Florida area win. #2 Pahokee beat #3 Hawthorne 28-14 and hosts #5 Chiefland next week in the regional final.
