The state semifinals of the 2019 FHSAA playoffs were played on Friday. There were nine South Florida high schools that played in a state semifinal contest and seven of the them advanced to a FHSAA championship game.
Two local schools had a rematch in the Class 8A state semifinal. Columbus prevailed over Deerfield Beach 28-21 and will take on Apopka.
St. Thomas Aquinas and Venice met each other in the Class 7A state semifinal for the fourth consecutive year. STA won 42-0 and next faces Edgewater.
The Class 6A state semifinal had Miami Central edge Palmetto 34-30. They will challenge Escambia next.
Miami Northwestern doubled up Jesuit 42-21 in the Class 5A state semifinal. They look to capture their third straight state championship against Jones.
The Class 4A state semifinal saw Miami Central take care of Lakewood 9-7. Next up for them in the championship game is Bolles.
It was the fourth straight season that Chaminade-Madonna won a state semifinal. They defeated Clearwater Central Catholic 28-7 and look to win their third consecutive state title versus Florida State University.
Champagnat Catholic returned to the Class 2A title game. They handled Seffner Christian 30-21 in the state semifinal and next challenge Victory Christian.
Class 1A was the only classification where a South Florida high school did not prevail. Pahokee lost in the state semifinal to Madison County 37-36.
