The Florida Panthers completed the greatest comeback in franchise history with a 5-4 shootout win over the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Tuesday night. The Panthers overcame a four-goal deficit in the third period. The Cats finished with a 2-1-0 record during the three-game road trip and will play 14 of their next 16 games at home.
After a scoreless first period, Boston(11-3-4) broke the tie at the 11:55 mark in the second. Patrice Bergeron pushed a backhand pass ahead to David Pastnak in the neutral zone. He skated down the left side and rifled a snap shot from the top left circle past Sergei Bobrovsky for his league-high 16th goal of the season.
The B's made it 2-0 with 5:58 to go. Charlie Coyle got to the loose puck and lifted a backhand pass from the blue line to Joakim Nordstrom on the right-wing wall. He moved to the low right circle and scored on a wrist shot.
It became 3-0 for the Bruins on the power play with 2:44 left. Brad Marchand shoveled it back to David Krejci on the left point. He angled a pass to the right side and Anders Bjork released a shot from the right-circle dot.
Florida(9-4-5) surrendered one more goal with 28.1 seconds remaining. Zdeno Chara centered the puck from low left circle which grazed off the stick of Danton Heinen at the top of the crease. A shot by Krejci from the right of the crease was saved, however Chara chipped in the rebound from the goal line. Sam Montembeault replaced Bobrovsky in net for Florida after two periods.
The Panthers broke the shutout 50 seconds into the third period. Aaron Ekblad got his second goal of the year on assists from Keith Yandle and Aleksander Barkov.
The score became 4-2 when the Cats got a tally with the man advantage at 5:26. After Mike Hoffman handed the puck at the left point, Jonathan Huberdeau slipped a pass from the left circle to the high slot and former Bruin Frank Vatrano powered a one-time slap shot by Tuukka Rask.
Florida cut the deficit to 4-3 on the power play with 10:17 left. Yandle slid the puck from the high slot to the right circle. Hoffman deked around Charlie McAvoy in the low left circle and backhanded it into the Boston cage.
The Cats eventually tied the contest with 1:39 to go and erased a four-goal margin in the third period. Huberdeau sent a lead pass through the left circle and Barkov put a backhand shot in the crease that was stopped. Yandle followed up on the rebound and scored on a wrist shot from the low slot. Huberdeau tied Stephen Weiss for the most assists in Panthers franchise history with 249.
The game went into a shootout. Vincent Trocheck snapped in a shot during the Panthers second attempt. Coyle roofed a shot on the Bruins third attempt. Hoffman answered with a quick snap shot on the fourth attempt by Florida for the victory.
