The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders challenge the Edgewater Eagles in the FHSAA Class 7A state championship game on Saturday night. It is the final state title contest to be played this week at Daytona Stadium in Daytona Beach.
St. Thomas Aquinas(13-0) looks for redemption after losing the Class 7A title game against Lakeland 33-20 in Orlando last year. The undefeated Raiders have compiled seven shutouts and outscored their opponents 547-108 this season. STA has made an appearance in the championship game in 12 of the last 16 years. They clobbered South Broward 52-0 in the regional quarterfinal, defeated Plantation 59-19 in the regional semifinal, blanked Atlantic 26-0 in the regional final and shut out Venice 42-0 in the state semifinal. Quarterback Zion Turner can race out of the pocket at any time. He can connect passes to wide receivers Marcus Rosemy, Jahvante Royal, The'Andris Freeman and Ethan Corbijn. Running backs Jaedon Henry and Anthony Hankerson will see their share of rushing opportunities from the backfield.
Edgewater(13-1) has been victorious in their last seven games. They have outscored their last seven opponents 286-98. The Eagles defeated Crestview 31-14 in the regional quarterfinal, survived double overtime against Lincoln 23-17 in the regional semifinal, dropped Niceville 28-20 in the regional final and upset Armwood 38-27 on the road in the state semifinal. Quarterback Canaan Mobley looks to find wide receivers Davin Martin, Christian Leary, Tommi Hill. Jeremiah Connelly and Anthony Weeden downfield for pass receptions. Running backs Isaiah Connelly, Treveon Bouie and Cedric Baxter are expected to carry the ball.
