The Atlantic Eagles held on to defeat the Park Vista Cobras 14-7 at War Eagle Stadium in a Class 8A regional semifinal on Friday night. It was another defensive battle between both District 10 high schools like their meeting earlier this season. The Eagles will host Western in the Region 4 regional final next week.
Atlantic(10-1) moved out to the lead late in the first quarter. Varrick Lurry-Davis returned a punt 50 yards to the Cobras one-yard line. The Eagles scored on the first play of the drive when quarterback Antoine Williams II plunged into the end zone to make it 7-0 with 1:58 left in the first.
In the second quarter, the Eagles extended their lead to 14-0 at the 6:15 mark. Running back Shelley Singletary rushed up the middle from 20 yards away.
Park Vista(8-3) changed quarterbacks as they brought in Tyler Thomas to begin the second half, moved John Smith to the slot receiver position and that led to several scoring opportunities. The Cobras closed the gap to 14-7 with 2:43 remaining in the third quarter. Thomas fired a seven-yard pass to wide receiver Atorian Perry on the left sideline for a touchdown.
The Cobras had a chance to tie the game on their final possession. Perry made a one-handed catch for a first down at the Eagles 30-yard line with 2:00 left. They were able to reach the 15-yard line with less than one minute to go, however they lost the ball on downs.
