The Florida Panthers were defeated by the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 in overtime on Tuesday night at PPG Paints Arena. The Panthers, who are now winless in their last five games, stand 11 points behind for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Things began quickly for Florida(28-26-12) as they made it 1-0 just 1:45 in on the power play. Henrik Borgstrom got a tally on assists from Aaron Ekblad and Mike Hoffman. Borgstrom has scored three goals in the last three games.
The second period would belong to Pittsburgh(35-22-9). Jake Guentzel got his 32nd goal of the season at 16 seconds on a snap shot from the high slot. Jared McCann and Sidney Crosby were credited with assists on the play.
They added a power-play goal at the 10:01 mark of the period to go up 2-1. Patrick Hornqvist angled a pass to his left where Sidney Crosby was at the Panthers blue line. He sent a diagonal pass to Phil Kessel in the right circle. His forehand shot was saved by Roberto Luongo, however Crosby scored on the rebound from the low slot for his 30th goal of the season. It was the ninth time that he has reached the 30-goal mark during his NHL career.
The Panthers tied the contest up 2-2 with 2:29 remaining in the second. Hoffman forwarded a pass from the top left circle and Vincent Trocheck one-timed a slapshot from the low left circle past Matt Murray for his seventh goal of the campaign.
The Penguins got the victory at with 2:16 left in overtime. Crosby took away the puck from Mike Matheson in the Pittsburgh zone. He sent a lead pass through the neutral zone and Guentzel raced for it at the Panthers blue line. He went through the slot, deked in the crease and swept in a backhand shot by Luongo. Crosby now has five goals and eight assists in the last five games.
