The Florida Panthers lost to the Washington Capitals 4-3 on Wednesday at Capital One Arena. The Panthers will begin a nine-game home stand on Saturday against the Nashville Predators.
In the first period, Washington(17-4-5) got the lead 1-0 with 2:03 to go. Alex Ovechkin blasted in his 16th goal of the season.
Florida(12-8-5) tied it 1-1 at the 11:17 mark of the second period. Brett Connolly burned his former team with a tally.
Richard Panik helped the Caps reclaim the lead 2-1 with one minute left. The Cats responded 22 seconds later to even it up on the 10th goal of the year by Mike Hoffman.
The Capitals moved out in front again as Lars Eller scored at 5:18 to make it 3-2. Brendan Lepsic added a goal with 8:01 remaining for a two-goal margin.
The Panthers closed it to 4-3 with 4:29 remaining. Vincent Trocheck found the net for his fourth goal of the campaign.
