Sabres Settle Panthers

     The Florida Panthers fell to the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 at KeyBank Center on Saturday night. The Panthers continued their four-game road trip. Panthers forward Patrick Giles made his National Hockey League debut. 
     Florida(1-2-0) got out to a 1-0 advantage at the 9:01 mark of the first period. Jesper Boqvist made a square backhand pass from the high slot. A.J. Greer passed from the top left circle and Nate Schmidt released a wrist shot from the high slot for his first goal in a Panthers uniform. 
     Buffalo(1-3-0) tied it up 1-1 with 3:14 to go in the period. Peyton Krebs backhanded the puck from the left corner. Jordan Greenway carried it from the left circle and lifted a backhand shot past Spencer Knight from the right of the crease for his first goal of the 2024-25 campaign. 
     The Sabres took a 2-1 lead with 2:33 remaining in the first. Connor Clifton cleared the puck out of his zone and Alex Tuch angled a pass from the red line to his right. Tage Thompson snapped a shot from the right circle for his second goal of the season. 
     In the second period, Buffalo increased their lead to 3-1 at 1:34. Rasmus Dahlin brought the puck from the left point to the top of the zone. He slid it across to Henri Jokiharju and he blasted a one-time slap shot from the left point for his first tally of the year. 
     The Sabres made it a three-goal margin 4-1 with 3:38 to go in the period. Ryan McLeod pushed it from behind the net and Jason Zucker flipped a backhand pass from the right goal line. Mattias Samuelsson put in a wrist shot from the top left circle. McLeod and Zucker collected their first points in a Sabres jersey. 
     The Panthers closed it to 4-2 on the power play with 1:18 left in the second. Evan Rodrigues sent a diagonal pass from the left wing to the right point. Sam Reinhart shot the puck and Sam Bennett redirected it in from top of the crease by Devon Levi for his third goal of the season. 
     The Cats pulled their goalie for an extra attacker with 2:57 remaining in the third period. It did not work when Tuch intercepted a pass and scored an empty-net goal from the neutral zone with 1:12 left in the third to make it 5-2.
