It was a familiar Class 2M District 12 matchup as the American Heritage Patriots defeated the Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs 21-2 at Dr. Bud Tight Field in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday. The Patriots have won 15 of the last 17 meetings between both Broward County high schools.
The venue has been known as The Furnace for several decades. It was due to the Chiefs playing daytime games because there were no overhead lights at the field.
American Heritage(5-1) bounced back following their loss to the Chaminade-Madonna Lions two weeks ago. The Patriots, who have outscored their opponents 247-105 this year, host the Western Wildcats in Plantation next week.
Cardinal Gibbons(5-1) had won 11 consecutive games heading into this contest, which included winning the 2021 FHSAA Class 4A state championship over Cocoa at DRV PNK Stadium. The Chiefs stay home against Belen Jesuit in a week.
