The Cats improved their home record to 32-6-0 this season and they now have the eighth most home wins ever in a regular season. Former Florida Panthers left wing and current Winnipeg Jets head coach Dave Lowry guided a National Hockey League club for the first time in Sunrise.
Florida(53-15-6) broke out to a 2-0 lead early in the first period. They struck first as Jonathan Huberdeau scored the opening goal at the 2:03 mark on assists from Claude Giroux and Sam Bennett. Huberdeau tied Pavel Bure back in 1999-2000 for the second-longest point streak in team history at 13.
Huberdeau got his second tally of the contest and 30th goal of the season at 4:47 from close range. Giroux collected his second assist of the game and Ben Chiarot had the secondary assist on the play.
In the second period, the Panthers made it a three-goal gap. Gustav Forsling found the net for the seventh time of the campaign. Brandon Montour and Sam Reinhart were able to set up the play.
Winnipeg(35-29-11) surrendered another goal with 3:39 left in the second and trailed 4-0. Giroux made a touch pass at the red line and Huberdeau carried it into the offensive zone on right side. He connected a pass from the right circle and Forsling snapped a shot from the high slot past Connor Hellebuyck for his second goal of the game and eighth goal of the season. It was the third assist for Giroux and the third point for Huberdeau in the contest.
The Jets broke the shutout just 1:07 into the third period. Nikolaj Ehlers got to the rebound and put in a forehand shot by Sergei Bobrovsky for his 26th goal this season.
The Panthers answered back 47 seconds later and expanded it to 5-1. Reinhart poked the puck from the end wall and Mason Marchment scored from the edge of the blue paint for his 16th goal of the year.
Maxim Mamin added another tally at the 7:00 mark as he slid a backhand shot on a breakaway by Eric Comrie and Florida had a five-goal margin. MacKenzie Weegar started the play with a long lead pass from his own zone.
