Virginia Escapes Miami

     The Virginia Cavaliers got by the Miami Hurricanes 30-28 at Hard Rock Stadium on Thursday night. Both schools played for the second time in five days. 
     Virginia(3-2, 1-2) pulled ahead 7-0 at 7:21 of the first quarter. Running back Wayne Taulapapa rushed up the middle from one yard away. The Cavaliers added a safety when Canes running back Cam'ron Harris was stopped in the end zone with 1:10 to go in the first. 
     Miami(2-3, 0-1) cut it to 9-7 with 2:30 left in the second quarter. Harris was able to plunge in on a one-yard touchdown run. 
     The Cavaliers got into the end zone with 50 seconds remaining in the first half to lead 16-7. Running back Mike Hollins went through the right side of the line and scored from 25 yards out. 
     In the third quarter, Virginia added to their lead to make it 19-7. Brendan Farrell was able to kick a 43-yard field goal at the 11:54 mark. 
     The Hurricanes answered back quickly at 9:42. Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke fired a 16-yard pass to wide receiver Mike Harley in the back left corner of the end zone. 
     Virginia responded with 5:50 left in the third. Quarterback Brennan Armstrong connected a 36-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks in the front of the end zone. 
     The Canes completed the scoring during the third quarter. Harris raced down the field for a touchdown from 57 yards away to make it 27-21 with 1:04 to go.
     In the fourth quarter, the Cavaliers expanded their lead to 30-21 at the 12:52 mark. Farrell ended up booting a 30-yard field goal.
     The Canes closed the gap with 9:09 left when Van Dyke rolled out of the pocket and sprinted down the right sideline for a 24-yard touchdown run. Hurricanes kicker Andres Borregales missed a go-ahead field goal from 33 yards out with no time remaining as it hit the left upright.

Mets Handle Marlins

     The New York Mets held off the Miami Marlins 12-3 at Citi Field on Thursday night. The Marlins will finish their 2021 regular season at home with three games against the Philadelphia Phillies. 
     New York(76-83) scored first in the second inning. Pete Alonso smashed a solo homer to left-center field on a 1-2 pitch for his his 36th home run of the season. 
     Miami(65-94) answered back in the top of the third to go ahead 2-1. Lewis Brinson lifted a two-run homer to left-center field on a 3-2 count with Jazz Chisholm Jr. aboard. 
     The Mets evened it up 2-2 in the bottom of the frame. Michael Conforto knocked in James McCann with a single into right field. 
     The Fish moved ahead 3-2 in the top of the fourth. Magneuris Sierra singled to right field and Eddy Alvarez reached home. 
     New York piled on four runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Mets tied it 3-3 as Javier Baez scored on a Jonathan Villar single to left field. McCann then drove in Jeff McNeil and Villar with a double into left field. Conforto capped it on a base hit to center and McCann crossed home plate. The Mets added six more runs in the eighth inning for the victory. 

Phillip Dorsett Signs With Seahawks

     Wide receiver Phillip Dorsett has signed a contract with the Seattle Seahawks and will be assigned to their practice squad. He was released earlier this week from the practice squad of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
     Dorsett had local roots with the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders and the University of Miami Hurricanes. He played his first two years with the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL and followed that with three seasons with the New England Patriots.

Panthers Come Back On Stars

     The Florida Panthers got by the Dallas Stars 4-3 in a shootout at American Airlines Center on Wednesday night. The Panthers are undefeated in the preseason with three straight victories. 
     Florida picked up the only goal of the first period at the 3:20 mark. Mason Marchment helped the team with a power-play goal. It became 2-0 for the Panthers at 2:57 of the second period as Logan Hutsko put in the puck. 
     Dallas took over for the rest of the second as they got three unanswered goals to take the lead 3-2. Alexander Radulov scored at 6:55, Jason Robertson placed a power-play goal with 7:11 left and Jamie Benn had an even-strength goal with 5:53 to go in the second period. 
     The Panthers waited until the final minute of regulation to tie the contest 3-3. Serron Noel put in a tally with 44 seconds remaining in the third period. 
     The Cats got the win in a shootout. Both clubs missed their first two shootout attempts. After Dallas were unable to convert on their third attempt, Noel scored for Florida on their third shootout attempt. 

Marlins Stop Losing Streak Versus Mets

     The Miami Marlins took down the New York Mets 3-2 on Wednesday night at Citi Field. The Marlins ended a seven-game losing streak.     
     New York(75-83) moved out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Michael Conforto blasted a solo home run to center field on a 3-0 pitch. 
     In the fifth inning, the Mets expanded it to 2-0. Brandon Nimmo knocked in Dominic Smith on a double into left field. 
     Miami(65-93) overcame the deficit in the top of the eighth and went in front 3-2. Alex Jackson doubled to deep center for Lewin Diaz to score. Two batters later, Miguel Rojas drove in Eddy Alvarez and Magneuris Sierra with a base hit to right field. 

Inter Miami CF Falls To Atlanta United FC

     Atlanta United FC edged Inter Miami CF 1-0 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Wednesday night. Inter Miami CF is currently on a three-game losing streak. Atlanta United FC knocked off Inter Miami CF for the first time in six tries. 
     There was only one goal in the contest. Josef Martinez scored on a penalty kick during the 78th minute as he pushed the ball with his right foot into the low right side of the net. 

Florida Panthers Local Television Broadcasts

     The Florida Panthers will have their local telecasts on Bally Sports Florida this season. They will carry 74 regular season games for the 2021-22 campaign. Fox Sports Florida changed their brand name to Bally Sports Florida at the end of March. 
     None of the team's games will be on national television for the upcoming season. ESPN and Turner Sports recently became the national television rightsholders of the National Hockey League. The Panthers will appear exclusively on ESPN+ and Hulu streaming services for eight contests.

Mets Get Doubleheader Sweep Of Marlins

     The Miami Marlins were swept in a twin bill by the New York Mets at Citi Field on Tuesday night as they lost 2-1 in the second game of a doubleheader. The Mets took the first game by a score of 5-2. The Marlins have now lost seven consecutive contests. 
     Miami(64-93) got out to a 1-0 lead during the top of the second. Jesus Sanchez powered a solo home run to right field on the first pitch. 
     In the fifth inning, New York(75-82) evened it up 1-1. Kevin Pillar singled into left field and Jonathan Villar scored.
     The Mets picked up the victory in extra innings during the bottom of the ninth. James McCann grounded into a fielder's choice to the pitcher and Javier Baez crossed the plate. 

Mets Slow Down Marlins

     The New York Mets knocked off the Miami Marlins 5-2 at Citi Field on Tuesday. It was the first contest of a doubleheader between both clubs. This particular game was postponed on September 1 and rescheduled for today. 
     New York(74-82) sprinted out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. After a leadoff triple down the right-field line into the corner by Brandon Nimmo, Francisco Lindor drove him in on a base hit into center field. 
     It became 3-0 for the Mets during the bottom of the third. Jonathan Villar sliced a single into shallow right field and Michael Conforto crossed the plate. Kevin Pillar then reached base on an Eddy Alvarez fielding error at third for Javier Baez to score. 
     In the fourth inning, Miami(64-92) was able to bounce back. Lewin Diaz smashed a two-run homer to right field on a 2-2 count into the upper deck with Jesus Sanchez aboard. 
     The Mets put the game away in the bottom of the sixth. Lindor lifted a two-run home run to left field on the first pitch for his 19th homer of the season.

Phillip Dorsett Released By Jaguars

     Former St. Thomas Aquinas wide receiver and special teams returner Phillip Dorsett was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars from their practice squad. He initially signed with the Jaguars back in March and was involved in one regular season game this season. 
     Dorsett began his first two seasons in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts. He was dealt to the New England Patriots for Jacoby Brissett in September 2017 and helped the Pats win Super Bowl LIII over the Los Angeles Rams. 
     He played high school football with the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders where he captured two national championships and two FHSAA state titles in 2008 and 2010. He eventually joined the University of Miami Hurricanes for college football. 

NHL Next Offseason To Be Shortened Again

     The National Hockey League offseason will be shortened for the third straight time next summer. It was done following the interruption of the coronavirus pandemic during the 2019-20 campaign and last season which was played only in the 2021 calendar year from January to July. 
     The last day possible day of the Stanley Cup Final is on June 30 for the 2021-22 season. The NHL season has been completed and the Stanley Cup is raised in mid-June on almost all occasions.  
     The annual NHL Draft will be held on July 7 and July 8 at the Bell Centre in Montreal. The draft has been usually held during the final two weeks of June. 
     The free agency period to sign players will be pushed back to July 13. It has been a general idea in recent years to begin free agent signings on Canada Day which is July 1. 
     The NHL regular season schedule was released back in late July. The 2021-22 campaign will begin on October 13. The National Hockey League will have a three-week stoppage in February due to the Winter Olympics. The trade deadline has been placed on March 21 while the end of the regular season will be April 29. 

C.J. Henderson Traded To Carolina

     Former local high school defensive back C.J. Henderson has been traded by the Jacksonville Jaguars to the Carolina Panthers. He was sent along with a fifth-round pick for tight end Dan Arnold and a third-round pick. 
     Henderson was drafted by the Jaguars with the ninth overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft. He compiled one interception in 10 games with them. 
     He played high school football with the Christopher Columbus Explorers. He moved on to the University of Florida Gators for three seasons.

Panthers Win Doubleheader From Predators

     The Florida Panthers played in their annual preseason doubleheader on Sunday at FLA Live Arena against the Nashville Predators. Both clubs participated in the first preseason doubleheader in National Hockey League history back on September 19. 2011. 
     The Panthers ended up sweeping the 2021 version of the doubleheader versus the Predators. It was just the second time that the Panthers pulled off a doubleheader sweep facing the Preds. 
     Florida won the first game 5-4. Frank Vatrano had a hat trick putting in three goals during regulation. Sam Bennett scored on a rebound shot from the low slot 46 seconds into overtime to give them the victory. 
     The Cats defeated Nashville 3-1 in the second contest. Anthony Duclair, Carter Verhaeghe and Brandon Montour compiled goals for Florida.
     Nashville had swept the last two doubleheaders between both teams in 2018 and 2019. The Panthers previously took the doubleheader in 2013. They both split the doubleheader in 2011, 2016 and 2017. 

Raiders Outduel Dolphins In Overtime

     The Las Vegas Raiders survived the Miami Dolphins 31-28 in overtime at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday. The Raiders avenged a last-minute loss to the Dolphins in the same venue late last season. 
     The Dolphins lost their second straight game. The Raiders remained undefeated during the 2021 regular season. 
     Miami(1-2) raced out to a 14-point lead in the first quarter. Linebacker Elandon Roberts intercepted a pass and returned it 85 yards for a pick-six at 6:34. Running back Malcolm Brown went through the left side of the line and scored from 24 yards away with 3:07 left. The Raiders picked up a safety when wide receiver Jaylen Waddle was tackled in the end zone following a swing pass to the left side with 32 seconds to go in the first. 
     Las Vegas(3-0) chipped at the lead during the second quarter. Daniel Carlson kicked a 50-yard field goal at the 11:36 mark. Fullback Alec Ingold received a one-yard toss from quarterback Derek Carr for a touchdown and they trailed 14-12 with 1:56 left in the first half. 
     The Raiders took a 19-14 lead at 7:17 of the third quarter. Carr connected a 12-yard pass to wide receiver Hunter Renfrow in the end zone. 
     They extended the lead to 25-14 early in the fourth. Running back Peyton Barber leaped over a pile of players in the middle of the field at the 13:47 mark. 
     The Dolphins pulled off a comeback for the remainder of regulation time. Jason Sanders nailed a 46-yard field goal with 8:30 left. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett scrambled out of the pocket and scored from one yard out with two seconds left. Brissett found wide receiver Will Fuller in the end zone to get the two-point conversion and to tie it 25-25. 
     It was unusual to see three scores happen during the overtime period. Las Vegas got the first opportunity in overtime as Carlson booted a 38-yard field goal at the 6:27 mark. Miami(1-2) responded with a 50-yard field goal by Sanders with 2:49 to tie the game again 28-28. The Raiders answered back as Carlson kicked a short 22-yard field goal with no time remaining in overtime. 

Rays Sweep Marlins

     The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Miami Marlins 3-2 at Tropicana Field on Sunday. The Rays were able to sweep the three-game series against the Fish and tied a franchise record with 97 wins in a regular season. 
     Tampa Bay(97-59) chalked up two runs in the bottom of the first. Nelson Cruz hit a sacrifice fly to center which brought in Manuel Margot. Yandy Diaz followed with a sacrifice fly to right field and Wander Franco scored. 
     The Rays increased it to a three-run margin in the fifth inning. Cruz knocked in Franco with a base hit into left field. 
     Miami(64-91) closed it to 3-1 in the top of the seventh. Eddy Alvarez powered a ground-rule down the right-field line for Joe Panik to score.
     The Marlins had one final chance in the ninth inning, however they felt short. Lewin Diaz belted a 3-2 pitch over the right-center field wall for his seventh home run of the season. 

Tua Tagovailoa On Injured Reserve

     The Miami Dolphins have placed starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on the injured reserve list. He was injured during their contest against the Buffalo Bills last week.
     Tagovailoa will miss the next three games. Dwyer High School grad Jacoby Brissett is slated start at quarterback in Week 3 at the Las Vegas Raiders, Week 4 hosting his former club the Indianapolis Colts and visiting the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 5.

Rays Clinch Over Marlins

     The Tampa Bay Rays handled the Miami Marlins 7-3 on Saturday night at Tropicana Field. The Rays clinched the American League East Division title with the victory and a Boston Red Sox loss to the New York Yankees. 
     It was the Rays second straight divisional crown. Tampa Bay(96-59) captured the American League East title for the fourth time in franchise history. Miami(64-90) scored first in the top of the third for their only lead of the game. 

Miami Destroys Central Connecticut State

     The Miami Hurricanes dominated the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils 69-0 at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday. The Hurricanes will host Virginia Tech on Thursday to begin Atlantic Coast Conference play. 
     Miami(2-2) scored 21 points in the first quarter and 28 points during the second quarter for a 49-0 halftime lead. The Canes added 13 points in the third for a 62-point margin.

Rays Explode On Marlins

     The Tampa Bay Rays blanked the Miami Marlins 8-0 at Tropicana Field on Friday night. Tampa Bay(95-59) recently wrapped up their third straight postseason appearance. 
     Miami(64-89) fell in a 3-0 hole at the end of the first. The Rays added two more runs during the fourth and fifth inning for a seven-run cushion. 

Rockledge Shuts Out Deerfield Beach

     The Deerfield Beach Bucks went north on I-95 and lost to the Rockledge Raiders 7-0 on Friday night at Roe McCardy Stadium. Deerfield Beach(3-2) reached the midway point of the regular season. 
     Rockledge(5-0) got the only score of the contest with 5:11 left in the first quarter. The Bucks tried a flea-flicker play, however quarterback Michael Merdinger was stripped of the ball at the two-yard line by linebacker D.J. McCormick and he recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown. 

Tony Marino Exits WDBO

     Tony Marino is no longer at WDBO-AM in Orlando. He has been a part of the Cox Media Group Orlando news department since 2013. 
     Marino had several radio stints locally in South Florida. He had a long reign as a business talk host on Money Talk Radio 740 WSBR-AM in Boca Raton. It led to him having a nationally syndicated talk show on Business Talk Radio Network. He also hosted a brokered business show on television called Wizetrade TV. 
     He get involved in other facets on the radio airwaves. Marino became a traffic anchor for Metro Networks in Miami. He did traffic reporting with Total Traffic Network Miami following a merger of both companies. Marino worked as a weekend sports anchor on Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM in 2012. 
     Marino landed at WDBO-FM in Orlando in May 2013 as an afternoon news anchor and news reporter. He was an evening sports anchor at WDBO-AM when it had a sports talk format. The news format was shifted from WDBO-FM to WDBO-AM in June 2020 and he became evening news host along with being the afternoon news anchor. 
     He had other stops during his radio career. Marino was a morning host on WNNR-AM in Jacksonville from 2002 to 2005 and also co-hosted a sports show on that same radio station with Michael Irvin in 2005. Marino once was a news reporter and news anchor at KRLD-AM in Dallas. 

Dolphins Nominated For Pro Football Hall Of Fame

     !22 people were nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2022. The Miami Dolphins listed five former players. 
     The top player to be considered is linebacker Zack Thomas, who played for the Dolphins from 1996 to 2007. He has been a finalist for the last years.  Other Miami players that will be considered are offensive tackle Richmond Webb,  cornerback Troy Vincent, wide receiver Wes Welker and offensive tackle Jake Long.

A.J. Ramos Back In The Majors

     Former Miami Marlins pitcher A.J. Ramos has returned to the major leagues. He was called up by the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday. Ramos has been at their Triple-A affiliate in Salt Lake for the entire 2021 season. 
     Ramos pitched for the Marlins organization from 2012 to 2017 and spent his final three seasons with the club as their closer. He had 92 saves in 325 games with Miami. 

Boca Raton Burns Olympic Heights

     The Boca Raton Bobcats blasted the Olympic Heights Lions 42-7 at Corey Lewis Stadium on Thursday night. It was a battle between two Boca Raton area schools just seven miles away from each other. 
     Boca Raton(3-1) climbed out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Running back Trey Rainey was able to rush in from four yards away. 
     The Bobcats would dominate the second quarter. Rainey carried the ball 37 yards for a score at the 9:34 mark. He followed that on their next possession with an 89-yard touchdown run at 8:11 for a 20-point margin. 
     Olympic Heights(1-2) surrendered another touchdown several minutes later. Defensive back Jonny Caverly recovered a fumble and sprinted into the end zone. They converted a two-point conversion as wide receiver Jerome Puckett caught a ball from quarterback Jacob Cashion to make it 28-0. 
     Boca Raton scored on the final play of the first half when Cashion fired a 45-yard touchdown pass to Puckett for a 35-point gap. A running clock was implemented during the second half of play. 

Florida Panthers 2021-22 Preseason Training Camp

     The Florida Panthers preseason training camp begin with players practicing for the first time at FLA Live Arena in Sunrise on Thursday. Several new players on the club skating that were acquired during the offseason included Joe Thornton and Sam Reinhart. 
     The team will be involved in several preseason contests prior to the regular season. The Panthers will hold their annual preseason doubleheader against the Nashville Predators on Sunday. The Cats other home contests includes the Dallas Stars on October 1 and the Tampa Bay Lightning on October 9.

Nashville SC Blasts Inter Miami CF

     Nashville SC slammed Inter Miami CF 5-1 at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday night. Inter Miami CF have lost their last two contests and have been outscored 9-1 during those two games. 
     The first half belonged to Nashville SC as they leaped to a 3-0 lead with two goals by Hany Mukhtar and one by Walker Zimmerman. Inter Miami CF got their only tally of the game by Gonzalo Higuain in the 64th minute and cut it to 3-1. Nashville SC picked up a goal by Randall Leal during the 70th minute and from Alistair Johnston several minutes in the 96th minute. 

Nationals Handle Marlins

     The Washington Nationals held off the Miami Marlins 7-5 on Wednesday night at loanDepot park. The Nationals took two games of the three-game series between both teams. 
     Washington(63-89) got out to a four-run lead by the middle of the fourth inning. Miami(64-88) make it closer than it was with three runs during the bottom of the ninth. 

Jeff DeForrest And The Greek Gone From WINZ

     Fox Sports 940 Miami WINZ-AM will no local carry local programming. They have let go morning host Jeff DeForrest and mid-afternoon host The Greek. WINZ will now have syndicated Fox Sports Radio on their airwaves during weekdays and weekends. The radio station will still carry Miami Marlins, University of Florida football/basketball and NASCAR game broadcasts. 
     DeForrest, a Syracuse University grad, has been a longtime fixture on South Florida radio. He was on WINZ since July 2010 and his staff included producer and later on-air sidekick Mike Lubitz. 
     DeForrest started as a sports anchor at WINZ-AM and WINZ-FM. DeForrest was promoted to evening sports host of Sports Talk 610 and sports director on News Radio 610 WIOD-AM. He had a long reign there from the 1980s to the mid-1990s. He joined Sports Talk 560 WQAM-AM and was best known as the morning co-host with Joe Rose and later Steve Goldstein on The First Team from late 1996 until December 2001. DeForrest became the primary morning host and was dropped by WQAM in early 2002. 
     He became an afternoon sports host on 850 WFTL-AM. DeForrest landed at Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM in August 2004 as an evening host and was elevated to early morning host. After a stint as an evening sports host at 740 WSBR-AM and 1470 WWNN-AM in Boca Raton, he was hired by WFTL as a morning sports anchor. 
     DeForrest added duties at sister-station WMEN-AM when it launched into a sports talk format in March 2008 and he co-hosted the morning show with Lesley Visser. He eventually became the morning host of the program when Visser had other obligations. DeForrest held the morning shift until 2010. 
     He returned to Miami at WINZ as a mid-afternoon host in July 2010. DeForrest moved around the weekday schedule which included late morning host starting in September 2010, evening host in January 2012, morning co-host with Steve Goldstein in January 2013 and alone as morning host beginning in March 2015. 
     The Greek was added to Miami Sports 940 WINZ-AM back in January 2019 as a mid-afternoon host. He was later a contributor to the Jeff DeForrest Show along with being a mid-morning on-air sidekick and simulcasted on Sports Radio 1230 The Zone WBZT-AM in West Palm Beach. The Greek will continue to host a midday show called The Penthouse on WZZR-FM. 

WINZ Rebrands Name

     WINZ-AM  has changed their brand and their slogan on Tuesday. It has been rebranded to Fox Sports 940 Miami. They will no longer carry local programs consisting of morning host Jeff DeForrest and mid-afternoon host The Greek.
     It has been known as Miami Sports 940 since April 2014. They were called 940 The Sports Animal from April 2009 until 2014.

Nationals Speed Past Marlins

     The Washington Nationals quickly disposed the Miami Marlins 7-1 at loanDepot park on Tuesday night. Both teams finish up the three-game series on Wednesday. 
     Miami(64-87) broke up the scoreless tie during the fifth inning. Nick Fortes cracked a solo home run on a 0-2 pitch to left field for his second homer of the campaign. 
     Washington(62-89) picked up four runs in the top of the sixth. Kelbert Diaz knocked in Alcides Escobar with a base hit into left field. Yadiel Hernandez came up next and singled through the left side and Josh Bell scored. Jordy Mercer followed with a single to center field which brought in Ruiz. Luis Garcia then got an infield hit and Hernandez crossed the plate. 
     The Nationals added three more runs in the ninth inning for a 7-1 advantage. Escobar doubled to left field to score Garica and Lane Thomas. Juan Soto ripped a double into the right-field corner and Escobar scored. 

FLA Live Arena New Sunrise Venue Name

     The home venue of the Florida Panthers in Sunrise will be temporarily called FLA Live Arena. The organization will begin a search for a new naming rights partner and are hopefully expected to have a new name for the arena sometime in the near future. 
     It was called BB&T Center from 2012 until this week. There was a mutual consent between the Arena Operating Company and BB&T, now known as Truist, not to extend the naming rights agreement.
     FLA Live Arena will be the fifth name in arena history. It was known as National Car Rental Center from 1998 to 2002, Office Depot Center from 2002 to 2005, BankAtlantic Center from 2005 to 2012 and BB&T Center from 2012 to 2021.

Bills Dominate Dolphins

     The Buffalo Bills blanked the Miami Dolphins 35-0 at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday. The Bills have won the previous six meetings between both teams. It was the largest margin of victory for the Bills during a regular season game in over a decade. 
     Buffalo(1-1) scored on their first two possessions in the first quarter. Former American Heritage Stallions and Florida Atlantic University running back Devin Singletary rushed through the right side of the line and scored from 46 yards away at the 12:33 mark. 
     It became 14-0 for them with 7:02 to go in the first. Quarterback Josh Allen made a short pass to the middle to wide receiver Stefon Diggs for a five-yard touchdown. 
     Miami(1-1) surrendered another score at 11:48 of the third quarter and trailed 21-0. Allen connected an eight-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dawson Knox on the left side of the end zone. 
     The Bills added two more touchdowns during the fourth quarter. Former Mater Academy and Hallandale running back Zack Moss sprinted to the outside and got in from seven yards out with 13:38 left. Moss later plunged in from one yard away with 7:45 remaining for a 35-0 lead. 

Marlins Top Pirates And Get Eliminated

     It took extra innings for the Miami Marlins to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 on Sunday at loanDepot park. The Marlins avoided a three-game series sweep with the victory. 
     Miami(63-86) was eliminated from postseason contention and will not be in the National League Playoffs for the second straight year. The Atlanta Braves won their contest in San Francisco.

Pirates Sail By Marlins

     The Pittsburgh Pirates knocked off the Miami Marlins 6-3 at loanDepot park on Saturday night. The Pirates have taken the first two games of the three-game series. Both clubs will wrap it up on Sunday. 

Michigan State March By Miami

     The Michigan State Spartans handled the Miami Hurricanes 38-17 on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium. It was a rare appearance of a Big 10 team playing in a regular season game in South Florida. 
     After a scoreless first quarter, Michigan State(3-0) broke the ice at the 13:58 mark of the second. Matt Coughlin was able to kick a 23-yard field goal.
     Miami(1-2) answered back on their next possession at 10:08 to go up 7-3. Quarterback D'Eriq King rolled out to his right and found wide receiver Charleston Rambo in the back of the end zone on a three-yard touchdown pass. 
     The Spartans reclaimed the lead 10-7 with 2:56 left in the second quarter. Quarterback Payton Thorne threw a seven-yard touchdown toss to running back Kenneth Walker III on the right side. 
     In the third quarter, it became 17-7 for Michigan State at 6:08. Wide receiver Jalen Nailor received a swing pass on the right side from Thorne and walked in from 11 yards out. 
     The Hurricanes stormed back and cut it to 17-14 with 3:53 remaining in the third. King connected a 14-yard touchdown strike to Rambo in the front of the end zone. 
     The Spartans expanded their lead to 24-14 at the 13:10 mark of the fourth quarter. Thorne fired a 10-yard pass to Jayden Reed on a crossing pattern in the middle of the end zone. 
     The Canes attempted a comeback later in the quarter. Former Champagnat Catholic kicker Andres Borregales nailed a 55-yard field goal for his career-high with 8:11 remaining. 
     Michigan State increased it to 31-17 with 4:12 to go. Nailor caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Thorne. It was Thorne's fourth touchdown pass of the game. They added on another score for a 21-point margin when Reed took an end-around handoff to the left side from eight yards away with 2:32 left. 

New York Red Bulls Wallop Inter Miami CF

     The New York Red Bulls routed Inter Miami CF 4-0 on Friday night at DRV PNK Stadium. The loss snapped a six-game unbeaten streak and a five-game home winning streak for Inter Miami CF. They were playing their third contest in a seven-day stretch. 
     Patryk Klimala scored on a left-footed shot during the 17th minute and Omir Fernandez made it 2-0 on a head ball at the 30-minute mark of the first half. Fabio Roberto Gomes added header goals in the 64th minute and 88th minute. 

Nikita Gusev Joins Maple Leafs

     Former Florida Panthers forward Nikita Gusev has been added by the Toronto Maple Leafs. He has agreed to a professional tryout contract. 
     The Panthers signed Gusev during the 2020-21 campaign. He ended up collecting two goals and three assists in 11 games with the Cats. Gusev did not participate in their first-round playoff series against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Glades Central Smashes Santaluces

     The Glades Central Raiders went east and pounded the Santaluces Chiefs 45-6. The Raiders bounced back after losing last week at home to Atlantic. 
     Glades Central improved their record to 3-1 this season. Santaluces dropped to 0-4 and the Chiefs are still looking for their first victory of the year. 

Chaminade-Madonna Upsets Buford

     The Chaminade-Madonna Lions made the long trip up to Georgia and blanked the Buford Wolves 7-0. Their opponent was ranked in the top 20 nationally. 
     Chaminade-Madonna(3-1) got the only score of the game late in the first quarter. Running back Davion Gause raced in from 63 yards away for a seven-point lead. 

Pirates Edge Marlins

     The Pittsburgh Pirates slipped by the Miami Marlins 2-1 at loanDepot park on Friday night. It was the first contest of a three-game series between both teams. 
     Pittsburgh(55-92) struck early in the top of the first. Jacob Stallings reached base on a fielding error for Bryan Reynolds to score. 
     Miami(62-85) evened it up 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Eddy Alvarez singled into right field for Jesus Sanchez to score. 
     In the sixth inning, the Pirates regained the lead 2-1. Cole Tucker hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Colin Moran crossed the plate. 

Cris Carter On NFL Network

     Former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Cris Carter was a guest co-host on Good Morning Football at NFL Network this week. Carter played the 2002 season with the Dolphins where he compiled eight pass receptions for 66 yards and one touchdown in five games. 
     Carter was with the Philadelphia Eagles during his first three seasons in the National Football League and then spent 12 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2013. 
     He did television work previously with ESPN and HBO. Carter co-hosted the First Things First morning show at Fox Sports 1 from December 2016 to October 2019. 
     Carter also was an assistant coach with the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders from the mid 2000s to the mid 2010s. The school won FHSAA state championships in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012. 

Jaguars Release Duke Johnson

     The Jacksonville Jaguars have released running back Duke Johnson. He signed with that club on September 7 as was assigned to their practice squad. 
     Johnson played for the Miami Norland Vikings and the University of Miami Hurricanes prior to pro football. He had stints with the Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans during his six-year National Football League career.

Florida Panthers National Television Games

     The 2021-22 regular season national television schedules were issued by ESPN and Turner Sports. The Florida Panthers will not be appearing in either network this season. 
     The Panthers will made eight exclusive appearances on the ESPN+ and Hulu streaming service. The club will be on October 29 at Detroit Red Wings, November 9 at New Jersey Devils, host the New York Islanders on November 16 and at the New York Rangers on February 1. 
      Florida will be in four more contests during the second half of the NHL season. They host the Columbus Blue Jackets on February 24, visit the San Jose Sharks on March 15, are at the Vegas Golden Knights on March 17 and are home against the Detroit Red Wings on April 21. 
     

Ravens Promote Devonta Freeman

     The Baltimore Ravens will have running back Devonta Freeman in their lineup this weekend. He signed on to their practice squad last week. 
     Freeman played high school football with the Miami Central Rockets and helped them win the FHSAA Class 6A state championship in 2010. He then attended Florida State University for three years. 
     He was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Freeman captured an NFC championship with them in 2016. The Falcons lost Super Bowl LI to the New England Patriots in the first overtime in Super Bowl history. 
     Freeman played six seasons with the Falcons and rushed for 3,972 yards and 32 touchdowns in 77 games. He was with the New York Giants for five contests last season and compiled 54 carries for 172 rushing yards and one touchdown.

Edmonton Oilers Add Colton Sceviour

     Former Florida Panthers right wing Colton Sceviour has been signed to a professional tryout by the Edmonton Oilers. He spent last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins and had 10 points in 45 contests. 
     Sceviour spent four seasons with the Florida Panthers from 2016-17 to 2019-20. He compiled 31 goals and 48 assists in 284 games. 

Marlins Outlast Nationals

     The Miami Marlins overcame the Washington Nationals 8-6 on Wednesday at Nationals Park. The Marlins return home and challenge the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday. 
     In the fourth inning, Washington(60-86) went up 1-0. Lane Thomas drove in Jordy Mercer with a single to center field. 
     The Nationals extended it to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Riley Adams was able to walk with the bases loaded and Juan Soto touched home. 
     Miami(62-84) struck in the top of the sixth. Jesus Sanchez cracked a two-run homer to left-center field on a 1-2 pitch with Bryan De La Cruz aboard to tie it up 2-2. 
     The Nats recaptured the lead during the bottom of the sixth. Soto hit a sacrifice fly into left field for Thomas to score. 
     The Marlins evened it 3-3 in the top of the seventh. Miguel Rojas had an infield hit and Sandy Leon crossed home plate. 
     Washington answered back with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Yadiel Hernandez scored on a bases-load walk by Thomas. Alcides Escobar followed with a base hit to right field for Adams to reach home. 
     The Fish closed the gap again in the top of the eighth. De La Cruz bashed the first pitch over the left-center field fence. 
     Washington made it 6-4 in the bottom of the eighth. Josh Bell smacked a solo homer on the first pitch to right field for his 27th home run of the season. 
     Miami overcame a four-run deficit in the ninth inning. Rojas knocked in Isan Diaz with a single into right field. De La Cruz followed and grounded into a force out, however Jazz Chisholm Jr. scored. Sanchez then collected his second home run of the contest when he smashed a two-run homer to left-center field on the first pitch with De La Cruz scoring in front of him to take the lead 8-6.

Nationals Drive By Marlins

     The Miami Marlins fell to the Washington Nationals 8-2 at Nationals Park on Tuesday night. The three-game series will be decided tomorrow. 
     Washington(60-85) got ahead in the bottom of the second. Ryan Zimmerman belted a 3-1 pitch over the right-field wall for a solo homer. It was his 41st career home run against the Marlins which is tied with Ryan Howard for first all-time. 
     In the third inning, the Nationals increased it to 2-0. Juan Soto singled through the right side and Lane Thomas scored. 
     Miami(61-84) closed it to 2-1 in the top of the fifth. Lewin Diaz connected with a home run to right-center field on a full count. 
     The Nationals extended the lead again to 4-1. Alcides Escobar doubled to left field and Andrew Stevenson crossed the plate. Josh Bell later walked with the bases loaded to score Thomas. 
     The Marlins made it 4-2 in the seventh inning. Diaz got second home run of the contest when he pounded a solo homer to right-center field on a 2-1 pitch. 
     It became 8-2 for the Nats as they compiled four runs in the bottom of the eighth. They scored on two straight bases-loaded walks by Jordy Mercer and Thomas. Escobar hit a sacrifice fly to right and Luis Garcia reached home.  Soto thean drove in Mercer with a single into center field. 

Inter Miami CF Outmatch Toronto FC

     Inter Miami CF shut out Toronto FC 1-0 on Tuesday night at BMO Field. Inter Miami CF extended their unbeaten streak to six games and have been victorious in five of their last six contests. They are in the middle of  playing three games in a seven-day span. 
     There was no scoring in the first half. Inter Miami CF broke the scoreless tie during the 94th minute. Christian Makoun converted a penalty kick with his left foot into the low right corner of the cage. 

Derek Dietrich Cut By Nationals

     Former Miami Marlins player Derek Dietrich has been released by the Washington Nationals. He did not play in the majors this season and spent time since with their Triple-A club in Rochester. 
     Dietrich was with the Marlins from six seasons from 2013 to 2018. He played in 608 games with the Marlins and had a .254 batting average.

Marlins Shut Out Nationals

     Miami Marlins blanked the Washington Nationals 3-0 at Nationals Park on Monday night. Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara had his no-hitter broken up by Josh Bell on a double to right field with two outs in the seventh inning. 
     Miami(61-83) scored in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead. Jesus Sanchez singled into right field which brought in Bryan De La Cruz. 
     Washington(59-85) surrendered two more runs in the ninth inning. Alex Jackson drove in Lewis Brinson and Lewin Diaz on a double to left field. 

West Palm Beach Ratings August 2021

     The West Palm Beach sports talk radio ratings were released. The time span goes from the third week of July until the third week of August. 
     Fox Sports 640 South Florida WMEN-AM had a surprising drop to 0.3 after having a 0.5 in the prior two months. The New York Yankees made a charge into the American League pennant race as they won 13 straight games for their longest winning streak since 1961. 
     Sports Talk 1230 The Zone WBZT-AM stayed at a 0.0 for the seventh consecutive month. They have been at the same mark for 17 of the past 18 periods. The Marlins were not near a playoff position and were in last place inside the National League East. 

Marlins Release Ross Detwiler

     The Miami Marlins have released left-handed pitcher Ross Detwiler. He signed with the club back on January 3.
     Detwiler made 46 appearances with the Marlins this season. He compiled a 2-1 record with a 4.96 earned run average and 56 strikeouts in 45 1/3 innings.

Alex Donno Back On WQAM

     Alex Donno has returned to the airwaves at 560 The Joe WQAM-AM. He hosted the Miami Dolphins postgame show on Sunday. 
     Donno has not been at WQAM since he filled in as an afternoon co-host with Marc Hochman and Channing Crowder last year. He joined Onside Radio as a sports host and a studio co-host for Inter Miami CF games.in October 2020 and it lasted until June 2021. 
     He continues as a 5 Rings podcast co-host with Larry Blustein on 5 Reasons Sports Network. Donno began to host a midday podcast with that same organization in July. 

Dolphins Escapes Patriots

     The Miami Dolphins squeezed by the New England Patriots 17-16 on Sunday at Gillette Stadium. The Dolphins host the Buffalo Bills next week. 
     Miami(1-0) went up 7-0 at the 5:29 mark of the first quarter. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa scrambled to the right and scored from three yards away. 
     The Patriots made it 7-3 at 10:20 of the second quarter. Nick Folk was able to boot a 27-yard field goal. New England(0-1) took the lead 10-7 with 2:30 left in the second. Quarterback Mac Jones fired a seven-yard pass to wide receiver Nelson Agholor in the left slot. The Fins picked up a 48-yard field goal by Jason Sanders with four seconds left.
     In the third quarter, the Dolphins regained the lead 17-10. Tagovailoa tossed a three-yard swing pass to wide receiver Jaylen Waddle on the left side with 10:51 to go in the quarter.  
     New England added two field goals in the second half. Folk made a 42-yard field goal with 2:54 remaining in third and a 33-yard field goal with 10:39 left in the fourth. 

Braves Breeze By Marlins

     The Atlanta Braves held off the Miami Marlins 5-3 at Truist Park on Sunday. The Marlins head next to Washington D.C. and face the Nationals. 
     Miami(60-83) had a 1-0 lead at the end of two innings. Jesus Sanchez bashed a solo home run to center field on the first pitch in the top of the second. It was the third straight contest that Sanchez hit a homer against the Braves. 
     Atlanta(76-66) took the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Eddie Rosario powered a two-run homer on a full count to center field with Dansby Swanson aboard. 
     It became 3-1 for the Braves in the fifth inning. Travis d'Arnaud drove in Jorge Soler with a base hit into left field. 
     The Marlins answered back in the top of the sixth to tie it 3-3. Miguel Rojas singled into left field to score Lewin Diaz. Three batters later, Sanchez knocked in Rojas on a single to center. 
     The Braves compiled two runs in the seventh inning. Ozzie Albies ripped a solo home run to right-center field on a 2-1 pitch for his 28th homer of the year. Two batters later, Freddie Freeman blasted his 30th home run of the season on a 1-0 count to left field.

Marlins Dispose Braves

     The Miami Marlins took the Atlanta Braves 6-4 at Truist Park on Saturday night. The Marlins have won three of their last four games. 
     Miami(60-82) moved out to a three-run lead by the second inning. Eddy Alvarez got his first home run of the season on a 2-1 pitch to right-center field during the top of the second. 
     Atlanta(75-66) bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie it 3-3.Jorge Soler doubled to right field and Charlie Morton scored. Freddie Freeman came up next and singled to right field which brought in Soler. Austin Riley then knocked in Freeman on a base hit into left. 
     The Marlins pulled away in the top of the eighth. After Bryan De La Cruz smacked a solo home run on a 3-2 count to center field, Jesus Sanchez followed with a solo homer to right-center field on a 1-0 pitch. 

Miami Survives Appalachian State

     The Miami Hurricanes escaped with a 25-23 win against the Appalachian State Mountaneers on Saturday night at Hard Rock Stadium. Miami(1-1) bounced back following their opening week loss to Alabama. 

Inter Miami CF Dethorne Columbus Crew

    Inter Miami CF beat the Columbus Crew 1-0 at DRV PNK Stadium on Saturday night. The Columbus Crew are the defending Major League Soccer champions. Inter Miami CF have won four of their last five games and are unbeaten in their previous five contests. 
     In the first half, Inter Miami CF scored first. Gonzalo Higuain intercepted a back pass in the middle of the box and chipped a right-footed shot from eight yards away during the 15th minute. It was his ninth goal of the 2021 season. 

Erik Gudbranson Signed By Flames

     Former Florida Panthers defenseman Erik Gudbranson has signed with the Calgary Flames. It is a one-year deal worth $1.95 million. 
     Gudbranson split his time last season with the Ottawa Senators and Nashville Predators. He had one goal and three assists in 45 contests. Gudbranson played his first five NHL seasons with the Florida Panthers and helped the club win the Atlantic Division title in 2015-16.

St. Thomas Aquinas Tops American Heritage

     The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders outpaced the American Heritage Patriots 24-16 at Heritage Field in Plantation on Friday night. It was a battle between two defending FHSAA state champions.
     American Heritage(1-2) jumped out to a 7-0 lead at 4:43 of the first quarter. Quarterback Blake Murphy scrambled in through the right side from 10 yards out. 
     St. Thomas Aquinas(2-1) evened it up 7-7 with 3:07 left in the first. Quarterback Zion Turner fired a 26-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Isaiah Hardge on the left sideline.
     The Patriots reclaimed the lead 14-7 at the 6:45 mark of the second quarter. Running back Mark Fletcher plunged up the middle from two yards away. 
     It was tied up by the Raiders 14-14 at 9:51 of the third quarter. The Raiders defense stripped the ball and linebacker Derrieon Craig ran it back 27 yards for a score. 
     STA got their first lead of the contest with 7:22 left in the third. Turner connected a 15-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Camden Brown on the left side of the end zone. 
     The Raiders added a 26-yard field goal from Michael Kern with 8:15 remaining in the fourth quarter for a 24-14 advantage. American Heritage chalked up a safety with 5:28 to go and trailed by eight points. 

Braves Break Marlins

     The Atlanta Braves were victorious over the Miami Marlins 6-2 at Truist Park on Friday night. The Marlins will not have a winning season in 2021 and end up below .500 for the 11th time in 12 seasons. 
     Miami(59-82) had a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Jesus Sanchez cracked a two-run homer to right-center field on a 2-0 pitch with Bryan De La Cruz. 
     Atlanta(75-65) piled on five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ehire Adrianza knocked in Travis d'Arnaud with a base hit to left field. Jorge Soler followed with a single to into center which scored Orlando Arcia and Guillermo Heredia. Freddie Freeman continued the rally with an infield hit and Soler crossed the plate. 

Dwyer Upends Palm Beach Gardens

     The Dwyer Panthers defeated the Palm Beach Gators Gardens 7-0 on Friday night at Blum Stadium. Palm Beach Gardens(1-2) made the five-mile trip north on Military Trail. 
     Both high schools were held scoreless during the first half. Dwyer(2-1) got the only score early in the third quarter on a touchdown by wide receiver Terel Harris. A weather delay stopped the contest during the fourth quarter and it was not restarted. 

Benjamin Handles Cardinal Newman

     The Benjamin Buccaneers knocked off the Cardinal Newman Crusaders 17-7 at Sam Budnyk Field in West Palm Beach on Friday night. These are two of the better small school football programs in Palm Beach County. 
     Cardinal Newman(1-2) burned the clock on their first possession during the first quarter and scored with 4:44 to go. Running back Tovani Mizell busted through the right side of the line from five yards away. 
     The second quarter belonged to Benjamin(3-0). Quarterback Tyler Aronson tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Darrell Sweeting on the right side of the end zone to tie it up 7-7 at the 9:58 mark. 
     The Buccaneers later took the lead 14-7 later in the second. Aronson threw the ball to the front right side of the end zone where tight end Sean Rooney caught a 13-yard touchdown pass. 
     In the third quarter, Benjamin increased their lead to 17-7 with 4:17 remaining. Luke Casper was able to boot a 21-yard field goal.

Allison Williams Temporarily Off ESPN

     Former South Florida sportscaster Allison Williams will not be on college football broadcasts as a sideline reporter to start the 2021 season. She is expected to be back at ESPN in a couple of months. 
     Williams, a University of Miami grad, has covered college football for the past 15 years. She once was a sideline reporter on college football telecasts on Comcast Sports Southeast. She did host the College Football Tailgate Show on that same network. 
     She joined Fox Sports Net in 2008 as a sideline reporter for the Florida Marlins and the Florida Panthers. In addition, she was a reporter for Miccosukee Sports Rap. Williams became a sideline reporter for ACC college football contests. She added duties as the Florida Panthers studio host from 2011 until 2013. 
     Williams joined ESPNU as as college football sideline reporter. She became a college basketball sideline reporter for ACC Sunday evening games at ESPN in January 2012. 

Jorge Sedano ESPN Radio Play-By-Play Announcer

     Former Miami sportscaster Jorge Sedano has added duties as a NFL play-by-play announcer and college football play-by-play announcer for ESPN Radio. He will begin his new role on Sunday when he announces the Jacksonville Jaguars at Houston Texans. 
     Sedano had stints at 1700 The Fan WAFN-AM, Fox Sports Radio 940 WRFX-AM, News Radio 610 WIOD-AM, Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM and Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM from August 1999 to August 2013. He also was a sports anchor at WFOR-TV Channel 4 and a studio host for Miami Heat telecasts on Sun Sports in the early 2010s. 
     He has been associated with ESPN since September 2013. Sedano was a nationally syndicated sports host at ESPN Radio from September 2013 until September 2016. He has been on the air at KSPN-AM in Los Angeles since then. 
     Sedano, a Florida International University grad, became the studio co-host of Nacion ESPN and backup studio co-host of The Jump on ESPN. He later added NBA sideline reporter duties in July 2018. He continues as a panelist on Around The Horn.

Marlins Speed By Mets

     The Miami Marlins overcame the New York Mets 3-2 at loanDepot park on Thursday night. The Marlins picked up a series win versus the Mets. 
     New York(70-71) jumped to a 1-0 advantage in the first inning. Michael Conforto walked on a wild pitch and Javier Baez reached home. 
     The Mets increased it to 2-0 in the top of the third. Baez smashed a 1-1 pitch over the center-field wall for his 29th home run of the season. 
     Miami(59-81) began to mount a comeback in the sixth inning. Jazz Chisholm Jr. grounded into a force out and Eddy Alvarez crossed the plate. 
     In the seventh inning, the Marlins evened the contest 2-2. Isan Diaz scored when Lewis Brinson had an infield hit.
     The Fish took their only lead of the game 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth. Chisholm lifted a solo home run on a 1-0 count to right field for his 15th homer of the campaign. 

Jason Jackson New Miami Heat Radio Voice

     Jason Jackson has been named the new radio play-by-play announcer for the Miami Heat. He will replace Mike Inglis who just retired from the post earlier this week after 23 seasons. Jackson will become the fifth English language radio voice of the club following Sam Smith, Eric Reid, Dave Halberstam and Inglis. 
     Jackson has been the television studio host and sideline reporter for the Heat franchise since the 2003-04 season. He specifically was the studio host for home games and sideline reporter for road games on television broadcasts since October 2012. 
     He did fill-in for Mike Inglis on a couple games he missed last season. Jackson has also filled in for television play-by-play announcer Eric Reid in one contest back in 2013 and 2019. 
     It has been a long road for Jackson in his broadcasting career. He once was a sports anchor and sports reporter for WSVN-TV Channel 7 in Miami from 1993 to 1995.  
     He landed at ESPN as a sports anchor and later became the afternoon host on ESPN Radio. After his time at ESPN ended in 2002, Jackson stayed in Connecticut as a afternoon host at WPOP-AM in Hartford. 
     Jackson returned to Miami market and became the television sideline reporter and studio host in 2003. He did have a stint as a weekend host at Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM. 
     He joined Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM as a morning co-host. Jackson was later shifted to host the early afternoon show and stayed there until August 2008. He returned to The Ticket as the early afternoon host from February 2012 until October 2012. 
     Jackson has remained on the radio airwaves in recent years. He joined SiriusXM Radio as a Sunday midday host on NBA Radio. 

Miami Ratings August 2021

     The ratings were issued for Miami/Fort Lauderdale sports talk format radio stations. The time span went from the third week of July until the third week of August.  
     560 The Joe WQAM-AM moved up from a 0.6 to a 0.7 in the period. Miami Dolphins preseason games started to broadcast on that radio station. It will be the final complete period that ESPN Radio is on their airwaves. WQAM became the ESPN Radio affiliate in August 2019. 
     Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-FM dropped from a 0.9 to a 0.6 in the month. They did hold first place alone in the market during the previous three months. 
     Miami Sports 940 WINZ-AM fell to a 0.1 after five straight months with a 0.2. The Miami Marlins made some trades prior to the trade deadline at the end of July and were stuck in last place. 

Joy Taylor Adds Fox Sports Radio Show

     Former Miami radio talent Joy Taylor will host a Saturday mid-afternoon show on Fox Sports Radio beginning on September 11. She is the sports anchor and on-air sidekick on The Herd with Colin Cowherd at Fox Sports Radio and Fox Sports 1. 
     It will be the second time that Taylor will be on a Fox Sports Radio show with her name on the marquee. She did co-host a Saturday early afternoon program on Fox Sports Radio with Mark Willard from April 2016 until 2017. 
     Taylor began her professional broadcasting career with 560 WQAM-AM as a producer, show sidekick, sports anchor and sports host. She went to Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM as a morning sports anchor and on-air sidekick. Taylor was elevated to morning co-host alongside Jonathan Zaslow when Marc Hochman exited that radio station in December 2013. She left The Ticket in February 2016. 
     She joined Fox Sports in March 2016 and became the moderator for Undisputed with Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe on Fox Sports 1 in September 2016. Taylor was added to The Herd with Colin Cowherd in June 2018. 

ESPN Cancels Highly Questionable

     ESPN has dropped Highly Questionable from their programming. The final episode of Highly Questionable will be on Friday. 
     The show was initially called Dan Le Batard Is Highly Questionable on ESPN2 in September 2011. It would have him, his father and a rotating studio co-host. Le Batard did his last show in January and left the ESPN organization.

Derek Jeter Inducted Into Baseball Hall Of Fame

     Miami Marlins executive Derek Jeter was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York on Wednesday. He has been the Marlins chief executive officer since Bruce Sherman and him bought the team from Jeffrey Loria in September 2017. 
     Jeter played shortstop for the New York Yankees from 1995 until 2014. He captured five World Series title with them and compiled 3,465 base hits. 

Marlins Outlast Mets

     The Miami Marlins got by the New York Mets 2-1 at loanDepot park on Wednesday night. The Marlins have won three of their last eight contests.
     Miami(58-81) got a 1-0 lead during the second inning. Alex Jackson singled through the left side to score Bryan De La Cruz. 
     New York(70-70) tied it up 1-1 in the top of the seventh. Michael Conforto powered a solo home run to right-center field on a 1-0 pitch for his 12th home run of the season.  
     The Marlins pulled off a walk-off victory in the 10th inning. De La Cruz knocked in Jazz Chischolm Jr. on a base hit to center field. 

Miami Heat Radio Voice Mike Inglis Retires

     Miami Heat radio play-by-play announcer Mike Inglis has retired. He has been the radio voice of the Heat for the past 23 seasons. 
     Inglis announced all three Miami Heat NBA championship teams in 2006, 2012 and 2013. He worked all six NBA Finals that the team has been involved in. 
     He previously was the radio play-by-play announcer for the Indiana Pacers and Toronto Raptors. Inglis replaced Dave Halberstam as the new Miami Heat radio voice in 1998. 
     Inglis was the fourth English language radio play-by-play announcer in Heat history following Sam Smith, Eric Reid and Dave Halberstam. His game analysts during his reign with the Miami Heat included Ed Pinckney, Tony Fiorentino, John Crotty and Ruth Riley Hunter.

Miami Dolphins Sign Bobby Hart

     The Miami Dolphins have inked offensive tackle Bobby Hart to a contract. He will be assigned to the Dolphins practice squad. 
     Hart once played three years of high school football with the Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs and one year with St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders. He captured a FHSAA Class 5A state title and a national championship in 2010 during his senior season. He went on to the Florida State University Seminoles. 
     He was with the New York Giants for 33 games from 2015 until 2017. Hart joined the Cincinnati Bengals and participated in 46 contests from 2018 to 2020. 

Mets Beat Marlins

     The Miami Marlins fell to the New York Mets 9-4 on Tuesday night at loanDepot park. It was the beginning of a three-game series between both teams. 

Isaiah Wong on Lindy's Sports Cover

     University of Miami Hurricanes point guard Isaiah Wong appears on the magazine cover the annual Lindy's Sports college basketball. He will be entering his third year with the Canes. He averaged 17.1 points and 4.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 27 games last season. 
     Wong played his first two years in high school basketball with Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. He participated the next two seasons with Bonner and Prendergast High School in the Philadelphia area. 

Duke Johnson Signs With Jaguars

     The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed running back Duke Johnson to their practice squad. He has spent his six-year National Football League career with the Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans. 
     Johnson played high school football with the Miami Norland Vikings and captured a FHSAA Class 5A state championship in 2011. He then went on to the University of Miami Hurricanes for three years and compiled 3,519 rushing yards 26 touchdowns.

Denis Malgin Remains In Europe

     Former Florida Panthers center Denis Malgin has signed a four-year contract with ZSC Lions in the Swiss National League. He was with Lausanne HC in the same league last season. 
     Malgin played four seasons with the Florida Panthers. He compiled 28 goals and 32 assists in 184 games with Florida. Malgin was traded by the Panthers to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Mason Marchment in February 2020. 

Marlins Pick Up Taylor Williams

     The Miami Marlins have claimed pitcher Taylor Williams off the waiver wire from the San Diego Padres. He has been with the Padres for the last two seasons. 
     Williams had five relief appearances with San Diego in 2021. He had a 0-0 record with a 1.69 earned run average in 5 1/3 innings.

Phillies Topple Marlins

     The Philadelphia Phillies avoided a three-game sweep with a 4-3 victory over the Miami Marlins on Sunday at loanDepot park. The Marlins have Monday off while the Phillies travel to Milwaukee. 
     In the second inning, Miami(57-80) went in front 1-0. Isan Diaz grounded into a force out at second and Jesus Sanchez reached home.
     Philadelphia(70-66) chalked up three runs in the top of the fourth. Bryce Harper blasted a solo home run to right-center field on a 2-2 pitch for his 27th  homer of the season. Freddy Galvis later connected a two-run homer to right field on a 3-1 count with Didi Gregorius aboard. 
     The Fish closed it to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth. Bryan De La Cruz ripped a solo home run to left field on a 2-1 count. 
     The Marlins evened it up 3-3 in the sixth inning. De La Cruz reached base on a fielder's choice and Jazz Chisolm Jr. crossed the plate. 
     It would come down to extra innings. The Phillies pulled ahead in the 10th when Odubel Herrera singled through the right side and Galvis scored.

Marlins Come Back On Phillies

     The Miami Marlins rallied and defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 at loanDepot park on Saturday night. The Fish have been victorious in the last two games and look for the three-game sweep tomorrow. 
     Philadelphia(69-66) got two runs in the top of the fourth. Andrew McCutchen smashed a solo home run to center field on a 0-1 pitch for his 23rd homer of the season. Ranger Suarez later doubled into left field which brought in Didi Gregorius. 
     Miami(57-79) compiled three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Miguel Rojas drove in Bryan De La Cruz on a base hit through the right side. Three batters later, Lewis Brinson lifted a two-run homer on the first pitch to right field with Rojas aboard.

Inter Miami CF Blanks FC Cincinnati

     Inter Miami CF shut out FC Cincinnati 1-0 on Saturday night at TQL Stadium. It was the second time this season that Inter Miami CF visited Cincinnati. Both clubs played in the first Major League Soccer game ever in that venue back on May 16. 
     The was just one goal in the entire contest. Brek Shea was able to score on a left-footed shot from nine yards out during the 90th minute. Inter Miami CF has been unbeaten in their last four games. 

Alabama Rolls By Miami

     The University of Alabama Crimson Tide dropped the University of Miami Hurricanes 44-13 on Saturday in the annual Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. The game was held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. 
     Top-rated Alabama(1-0) scored in their first possession at the 12:07 mark of the opening quarter. Quarterback Bryce Young found wide receiver John Metchie Jr. on a 37-yard pass play to the right side. 
     The Crimson Tide extended it to 10-0 with 4:39 left in the first. Will Reichard was able to boot a 38-yard field goal. He increased the longest streak in college football with 16 straight field goals made. 
     In the second quarter, Alabama scored again 48 seconds into the frame. Young threw a nine-yard pass to tight end Cameron Latu in the front of the end zone. It was the first career catch by Latu to give them a 17-point lead. Reichard added a 51-yard field goal at 11:33 to make it 20-0. 
     The Crimson Tide expanded their lead to 27-0 with 6:55 left in the second. Young connected a 25-yard touchdown pass to Latu in the middle of the field and he angled to the left side to reach the end zone. 

CBS Sports Radio Network Back On WQAM

     560 The Joe WQAM-AM piped in CBS Sports Radio during their evening and late night time slots this past week. CBS Sports Radio was heard on that radio station in late nights, overnights and weekends from January 2013 until August 2019. 
     WQAM has been using ESPN Radio as their syndicated sports network since then when CBS Sports Radio was shifted to their sister-station Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM. They have broadcast Mike Greenberg along with Alan Hahn and Bart Scott from ESPN Radio in two-hour blocks during middays at WQAM since this past January.

Dillard Defeats Deerfield Beach

     The Dillard Panthers topped the Deerfield Beach Bucks 21-0 at Otis Gray Jr. Memorial Stadium on Friday night. The game was stopped a halftime due to COVID-19 concerns. The Panthers have compiled two shutouts in their first two contests of the regular season. 
     Dillard(2-0) took a 7-0 lead with 3:33 left of the first quarter. Quarterback Jaferris Finley ran up the middle from three yards away. 
     It became 14-0 for the Panthers at the 7:18 mark of the second quarter. Running back Christopher Johnson rushed up the middle untouched from 17 yards out. 
     Deerfield Beach(1-1) surrendered another touchdown with 3:56 remaining in the second. Finley pushed through the left side of the side and scored a four-yard touchdown. 

Cardinal Gibbons Handles Cardinal Newman

     The Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs knocked off the Cardinal Newman Crusaders 40-14 at Dr. Bud Tight Field in Fort Lauderdale on Friday night. The Chiefs are the defending FHSAA Class 4A state champions. 
     Cardinal Gibbons(2-0) jumped ahead in the first quarter. Defensive end Mason Thomas sacked the Crusaders quarterback at 5:14. The Chiefs then scored three plays later and were up 9-0. 
     Chiefs quarterback Dylan Rizk sprinted 36 yards for a touchdown with 2:20 left in the first for a 16-point lead. They were able to make a field goal with 3:18 remaining in the second quarter and were up 19-0. 
     Cardinal Gibbons had a 33-point cushion with 2:17 to go in the third quarter. Running back Kamari Moulton bounced off several players on a rush up the middle and scored from three yards away. 
     Cardinal Newman(1-1) broke the shutout at the 10:13 mark of the fourth quarter. Quarterback Davi Belfort fired a 17-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jarard Mosely on the left side of the end zone. 

Marlins Outscore Phillies

     The Miami Marlins outdueled the Philadelphia Phillies 10-3 at loanDepot park on Friday night. The Marlins, who came off a three-game road trip to New York, scored seven runs in the sixth inning to put the contest away. 

Dolphins Ink Jamal Perry And Milo Eifler

     The Miami Dolphins have signed defensive back Jamal Perry and linebacker Milo Eifler to their practice squad. The team released running back Jordan Scarlett with those additions. 
     Perry has played 27 games in the last two seasons with the Dolphins. Eifler was with the University of Washington in 2018 and the University of Illinois for the past two years. 

Dolphins Add To Practice Squad

     The Miami Dolphins have signed more players on their roster and will be assigned to their practice squad. They include running back Jordan Scarlett, wide receiver Brandon Powell, defensive lineman Jason Strowbridge, center Cameron Tom, defensive back Tino Ellis and linebacker Kion Smith. 
     Scarlett played high school football with the University School Suns and his senior year with the  St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders. He captured a FHSAA Class 7A state championship with St. Thomas Aquinas in 2014. He later attended the University of Florida and participated with the Gators. 
     Powell was with the Deerfield Beach Bucks while in high school and then played for the University of Florida. He had 12 completions for 69 yards and two touchdowns with the Atlanta Falcons last season. 
     Strowbridge went to Deerfield Beach High School and the University of North Carolina. He played in eight games with the Dolphins in 2020 and chalked up three total tackles. 

NHL Going To Olympics

     Players from the National Hockey League will be participating in the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China. The NHL already scheduled a three-week break in the 2021-22 regular season during February in case this would happen. 
     NHL players have not played in the Olympics since 2014. The league skipped participating in the 2018 Winter Olympics. The last major competition involving all National Hockey League players was the World Cup prior to the 2016-17 regular season.

Mets Swim By Marlins

     The New York Mets got by the Miami Marlins 4-3 on Thursday night at Citi Field. The Mets was able to sweep the three-game series against the Marlins. 
     Both clubs scored in the first inning. Miami(55-79) started off with a solo home run by Miguel Rojas to left-center field on the first pitch of the contest. Two batters later, Jesus Aguilar knocked in Jazz Chisholm Jr. on a base hit to left field.
     New York(66-67) responded on the first pitch in the bottom of the first with a solo homer by Jonathan Villar to right field. Villar homered for the second time in three games and compiled his 17th home run of the year. 
     The Mets jumped ahead 3-2 in the fourth inning. Francisco Lindor doubled to left field which brought in Brandon Nimmo. Lindor would later score on a balk. 
     In the sixth inning, the Marlins loaded the bases. Lewis Brinson ended up with a walk and Rojas crossed the plate to tie it up 3-3. 
     New York retook the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Dominic Smith singled through the right side and Jeff McNeil scored. 

Michael Irvin Rejoins ESPN

     Michael Irvin will become the Monday co-host of First Take on ESPN with Stephen A. Smith on September 6. Irvin was a NFL studio analyst in his first stint with ESPN. 
     Irvin played high school football with the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders. He won a national championship with the University of Miami Hurricanes and three Super Bowl titles with the Dallas Cowboys as a wide receiver. 
     He got into broadcasting as a panelist on The Best Damn Sports Show Period and a studio analyst on Fox Sports Net. Irvin then landed at ESPN as a NFL studio analyst. He also held a midday co-host spot at KESN-FM in Dallas. Irvin moved on to NFL Network as a studio analyst. 
     Irvin returned to Miami and joined 560 WQAM-AM as a midday host with Kevin Kiley as his sidekick in July 2010. Curtis Stevenson replaced Kiley as his on-air sidekick in August 2011. Irvin's program was shifted to late mornings in January 2012. He left the organization in July 2012. 
     He got involved participating in audio segments and podcasts. Irvin was hired by Radio.com as a football insider in May 2019. He launched his own podcast at PodcastOne in October 2020. 

Starlin Castro Released By Nationals

     The Washington Nationals have released infielder Starlin Castro. He has been with the Nationals for the last two seasons. 
     Castro played with the Miami Marlins in 2018 and 2019. He compiled 34 home runs and 140 runs batted in during 316 contests. 

Marlins Expand Roster

     The Marlins expanded their roster to 28 players as of Wednesday. Teams can have a 28-player roster as of September 1 according to the new collective bargaining agreement. Clubs had used a roster of 40 players during the final month of the regular season for many decades.  
     The Fish added two players that have played for the team this season. Pitcher Trevor Rogers came off the restricted list while infielder Joe Panik was activated from the COVID-19 list.

Riley Sheahan Goes To Seattle

     Former Florida Panthers center Riley Sheahan has joined the Seattle Kraken. He has signed a one-year deal worth $850,000. 
     Sheahan was part of the Panthers during 2018-19 campaign and had 10 points in 33 contests. He had stints with the Edmonton Oilers and the Buffalo Sabres in the last two seasons. 

Miami Dolphins Claim Elijah Campbell

     The Miami Dolphins have claimed defensive back Elijah Campbell from the New York Jets. It was one of several tweaks to the Dolphins roster. 
     Campbell has been in the National Football League for one season. He played three games with the Jets and was on their practice roster in 2020. 

Dolphins Waive Jamal Perry

     The Miami Dolphins waived cornerback Jamal Perry on Wednesday. The club have made numerous roster moves in the past two days. 
     Perry has played the last two seasons with the Dolphins. He was involved in 27 games and compiled one interception. 

Dolphins Practice Squad Signings

     The Miami Dolphins have added two more players to their practice squad. They are linebacker Shaquem Griffin and quarterback Reid Sinnett. 
     Griffin played 46 games with the Seattle Seahawks for the past three seasons. He signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins on July 23. 
     Sinnett played college football with the University of San Diego. He was cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneeers prior to the 2020 NFL season. He joined the Dolphins practice squad in September 2020. 

Marlins And Mets Game Postponed

     The Miami Marlins game against the Mets in New York for Wednesday has been postponed.  The decision was made on Tuesday due to the imposing weather approaching the New York City area. 
     The game will be made up on September 28. It will part of a doubleheader between both organizations that day.
