Belgium bounced out to a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute. Charles De Ketelaere tapped in a right-footed shot from four yards out. It was the first time the United States surrendered the opening goal of a contest in this year's tournament.
The Americans tied it up 1-1 in the 31st minute. Malik Tillman scored on a direct kick from 25 yards away with his right foot.
It became 2-1 for Belgium in the 33rd minute as they responded quickly. De Ketelaere put in a header from five yards.
In the second half, Belgium extended their lead to 3-1 during the 57th minute of play. U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese committed a turnover outside of the penalty area. Hans Vanaken floated a 33-yard shot with his right foot into an empty net.
The United States surrendered another goal during stoppage time and trailed 4-1. The U.S. gave the ball away deep in their own penalty area. Romelu Lukaku curled a right-footed shot from 10 yards away into the right side of the cage.
