South Florida High School Football Broadcasts

     There are limited options where to find South Florida high school football broadcasts this season. The only time you will see games on television this year will be on CW 34 WTVX-TV in West Palm Beach. They have broadcast Friday night football games since 2014. Both announcers from last year return for this season with ESPN West Palm sports anchor Jeremy Marks-Peltz as a play-by-play announcer and ESPN college football recruiting expert Gerry Hamilton as a game analyst.
     Only one radio station will broadcast football games in South Florida. ESPN West Palm 106.3 WUUB-FM will have broadcasts on Friday nights with a new announcing crew. Former CW 34 football voice Alex Kushel joins as the play-by-play announcer while former Jupiter Christian head coach Bill Powers works as the game analyst. The station will have less regular season game broadcasts this year with the end of the Oxbridge Academy football program. It is the ninth consecutive year that Good Karma Broadcasting has broadcast high school football games.
     The trend to broadcasting local high school football contests has almost disappeared during this decade. There were five different South Florida radio stations that broadcast a weekly high school football game back in 2011.

Blue Jays Jump By Marlins

     The Toronto Blue Jays pulled off a ninth-inning comeback and topped the Miami Marlins 6-5. The Marlins with the loss made certain that they will finish with a losing record this season.
     Miami(53-82) blasted out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. Derek Dietrich knocked in Brian Anderson with a single to right. J.T. Riddle then singled to left which brought in Dietrich. Starlin Castro would eventually score on a ground out to short by Austin Dean.
     The Fish made it a five-run margin in the bottom of the fifth. J.T. Realmuto drove in Anderson on a base hit into center field. Two batters later, Castro singled home Realmuto with a hit to right field.
     Toronto(61-73) scored a run in the top of the sixth. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. popped a sacrifice fly to right field for Curtis Granderson, who was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers after the game, to score.
     In the ninth inning, the Blue Jays pulled off a major comeback. Devon Travis walked with the bases loaded and Kendrys Morales crossed the plate. Justin Smoak came up next to pinch-hit and he blasted a grand-slam homer to right field on a 0-2 pitch to give Toronto their first lead of the contest.

Atlantic Outduels Dwyer

     The Atlantic Eagles held off the Dwyer Panthers 30-13 at Atlantic Stadium on Friday night. The Eagles were able to win on their home field for the second straight week against a challenging opponent.
     Atlantic(2-0) put up the only points in the first quarter. Wide receiver Kam Williams caught a four-yard touchdown pass on the right edge of the end zone from quarterback Kalani Ilimaleoata at the 9:00 mark.
     Javone Jackson brought a punt back 48 yards to the Panthers 14-yard line near the end of the first quarter. It led to a touchdown catch in front of the end zone by wide receiver Christopher Wilson from 21 yards away at 11:36 of the second quarter.
     Dwyer(1-1) took advantage of a blocked punt they made and took over at the Eagles 26-yard line. Running back Bobby Armes ran up the middle from the wildcat formation and scored from three yards out with 21.6 seconds left in the second.
     The Eagles reached the end zone on their first possession of the second half. Running back Montajh Joseph raced through the right side of the line and got a 13-yard touchdown run at the 8:43 mark of the third quarter for a 20-7 lead.
     The Panthers did not lay back and scored on their next drive. Quarterback Gio Richardson threw a swing pass to running back James Meeks on the right side and he sprinted into the end zone for a nine-yard score with 4:20 left in the third.
     In the fourth quarter, Atlantic was able to get the momentum. They got a 45-yard field goal by kicker Brian Litang at 11:02 and pulled ahead 23-13.
     Richardson later fumbled the ball for a turnover at his own 15-yard line. Several plays later, Joseph busted through the middle for a three-yard touchdown run with 7:34 remaining in the contest.

St. Thomas Aquinas At Piper Preview

     The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders make a rare trip to Sunrise and face the Piper Bengals on Friday night. The Raiders will be off next week as they will have a bye.
     St. Thomas Aquinas(1-0) played in a nationally televised home game last week and blanked DeMatha Catholic 38-0. Quarterback Curt Casteel calls the signals on offense with running backs Daniel Carter and Nigel White getting the bulk of carries. Wide receivers Jamal Cooney, Xavier Restrepo, Marcus Rosemy and Jahvante Royal intend to make pass receptions from Casteel.
     Piper(1-0) already have shown improvement after they underachieved last season following a district runner-up spot behind Deerfield Beach in 2016. The Bengals were one of the few schools from Broward County that beat a Dade County opponent in a season opener last week. They went on the road and edged the Norland Vikings 24-21.

Octavio Sequera Joins Cleveland Browns Radio

     Former Florida Panthers Spanish language radio game analyst Octavio Sequera has joined the Cleveland Browns Spanish language radio broadcasts on WLFM-FM as a game analyst for the upcoming 2018 NFL season. He has been associated with ESPN Deportes 990 WMYM-AM in Miami as a sports talk host for the last couple of years.
     Sequera worked on the Florida Panthers Spanish language radio broadcasts with play-by-play announcer Arley Londono for three seasons. The games were broadcast on ESPN Deportes Miami 1210 WNMA-AM, 990 WNYM-AM and ESPN Deportes 760 WEFL-AM in West Palm Beach. His first season broadcasting the Panthers was in 2014-15 and final season was in 2016-17.

Olympic Heights Routs Spanish River

     Two Central Boca Raton high schools met on Thursday night as the Olympic Heights Lions belted the Spanish River Sharks 42-7. The Lions put together 42 unanswered points during the first half.
     The start of the game began with a bang as Olympic Heights(2-0) scored on the first play of the contest. A.J. Wicihowski returned the opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown 16 seconds into the first quarter.
     Lions quarterback Connor Hone sent a pass to the right side of the end zone where wide receiver Aaron Jacobs caught it for a 15-yard touchdown. They led 14-0 with 3:44 left in the first quarter.
     O.H. compiled three touchdowns in under a two-minute span during the second quarter. Wide receiver Jack Coulson made an 87-yard reception from Hone for a score at the 10:47 mark.
     Spanish River(0-2) fumbled the ball away on the ensuing kickoff and the Lions capitalized on it two plays later. Coulson caught a pass from Hone on the front right side of the end zone to complete an 18-yard touchdown at 9:59.
     The Sharks went three-and-out on their next possession. Christian Ippolito blocked the punt and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown with 9:25 to go in the second.
     The Lions made it a 42-point margin with 3:42 remaining in the first half. Hone connected a 24-yard pass to Jacobs on the left sideline.
     There was a running clock for the entire second half. Spanish River finally got into the end zone at 3:55 of the third quarter. Quarterback Connor Tribby fired a long pass down the left side of the field for a 34-yard touchdown reception.

Red Sox Bash Marlins

     The Boston Red Sox pounded the Miami Marlins 14-6 at Fenway Park on Wednesday night. The Fish were swept by the Red Sox in the season series 4-0.
     Miami(53-81) struck in the top of the second. Derek Dietrich smacked a solo homer to right field on a 0-1 count. It was his 16th home run of the season.
     Boston(92-42) evened it up in the second inning. Eduardo Nunez skyed a solo home run over the Green Monster in left field on a 3-2 pitch for his ninth homer of the year.
     The Marlins moved ahead in the third inning as they scored two runs with two out. J.T. Realmuto doubled to left-center field for Brian Anderson to score. Starlin Castro followed with a base hit to shallow right-center field.
     The Red Sox responded with a run in the bottom of the frame. Mookie Betts homered to left on a 3-2 pitch for his 28th home run of the season.
     The Fish made it a 4-2 margin in the fifth. Castro knocked in Anderson with a single into center field. The Sox got a run in the sixth inning when J.D. Martinez singled up the middle of the diamond for Betts to cross the plate.
     The contest would change in the seventh inning. Miami posted one run at the top of the frame to pull ahead 5-3. Boston responded with a major rally as they scored 11 runs on 12 hits in the bottom of the seventh and led 14-5.

Dwyer At Atlantic Preview

     Two of the top schools in Palm Beach County battle it out as the Dwyer Panthers travel to Delray Beach and face the Atlantic Eagles on Friday night at Atlantic Stadium. Both teams started the regular season with victories last week. 

     Dwyer(1-0) finished with a surprising 40-0 home shutout over the Park Vista Cobras last Saturday. The Panthers have Gio Richardson at quarterback and James Meeks as their main running back. Both of them transferred from Oxbridge Academy during the summer. Other Panthers running backs in the backfield they have are Ernest Blackshear, Bobby Armes, Cedric Tucker and Reggie Gadsen. Richardson has several targets for passes that includes Tanner Franklin, Nic Jennings and Nick Bingo. Linebacker Antavious Lane, another transfer from Oxbridge Academy, anchors the Dwyer defense. Defensive backs Colby Dempsey and Dequan Wilson can have an impact as both made interception returns for touchdowns last week.
     Atlantic(1-0) bounced back after two tough games on offense prior to the regular season. They tied Miami Northwestern 8-8 in the spring football game and were defeated by Miami Central 39-7 in the preseason kickoff classic. The Eagles were able to blank the Palm Beach Central Broncos 14-0 in their home opener. This team has lived on their defense over the last couple of years and are led by defensive lineman Henry Bryant along with defensive backs Javone Jackson, Kael Williams and Deandre McCray. Kalani Ilimaleoata will dictate the offense as their quarterback and attempts to find wide receivers Kamareon Williams, Tyrese Blue and Tyler Burke on passes. 

Olympic Heights At Spanish River Preview

     Two local Boca Raton high schools will face each other on Thursday night. The Olympic Heights Lions head three miles east on Yamato Road and challenge the Spanish River Sharks.
     Olympic Heights(1-0) has shown signs of improvements since they lost their spring football game to Park Vista 28-7. The Lions defeated John I. Leonard 28-20 in the preseason kickoff classic and won their regular season opener as they got by the Boynton Beach Tigers 7-6 last week. Quarterback Connor Hone calls the signals on offense and looks to connect passes to wide receivers Jack Coulson and Ke'andre Hollis. Running back Nick Palmenteri will get the majority of carries from the backfield.
     Spanish River(0-1) has had trouble generating points on the scoreboard in their earlier contests this year. They were routed by Coral Springs 47-7 in the spring game and lost to West Boca Raton 25-13 in the kickoff classic. They visited Cardinal Newman last week and were handled by the Crusaders 49-14. The Sharks have Connor Tribby return as quarterback as he will try to find wide receivers Blake Goldberg, Benny Alfonso and Jared Moorer down the field. River can split the handoffs between running backs Nick Forde and Carlos Oliden.

Red Sox Zap Marlins

     The Boston Red Sox knocked off the Miami Marlins 8-7 at Fenway Park on Tuesday night. It was the first game of a short two-game series between both teams.
     In the second inning, Boston(91-42) got the first run of the game. Ian Kinsler drove in Xander Bogaerts with a base hit down the third-base line.
     Miami(53-80) answered immediately in the top of the third. Issac Galloway socked a solo home run to center field on a 1-1 pitch.
     The Red Sox regained the lead in the bottom of the frame. Andrew Benintendi doubled to deep right-center field for Jackie Bradley Jr. to cross the plate. Mookie Betts would later score on a sacrifice fly to left by Bogaerts.
     They expanded their margin to 4-1 during the bottom of the sixth. Eduardo Nunez homered to left field on a 0-1 count.
     The Marlins blasted through with five runs to go up 6-4 in the top of the eighth inning. J.T. Realmuto connected on a two-run homer to left field on a 2-0 pitch with Brian Anderson scoring in front of him on the play. Starlin Castro came up next and smashed a solo home run to center on a 1-1 count to tie the contest 4-4. Rafael Ortega later knocked in Magneuris Sierra and Miguel Rojas with a single toward left field to take the lead.
     Boston overcame the deficit in the bottom of the eighth. Bradley came to the plate with the bases loaded with two out and inserted a base hit up the middle which brought in J.D. Martinez and Nunez. Five pitchers later, Kinsler scored on a wild pitch to give the Sox a 7-6 lead.
     In the ninth inning, the Fish fought back with one run as Craig Kimbrel blew the save. Sierra singled through the right side of the infield to bring home Yadiel Rivera.
     The Red Sox responded again in the bottom of the frame for the walk-off victory. Martinez scored when J.T. Riddle tried to complete a double play, however his throw from second base went into the stands.  

Ron Newman Passes Away

     Former Fort Lauderdale Strikers coach Ron Newman passed away on Monday at the age of 82. He was the first coach of the Strikers when the Miami Toros moved to Fort Lauderdale and played at Lockhart Stadium in 1977. He stayed with the club through the 1979 season.
     Newman then joined the San Diego Sockers in 1980 and stayed with them until 1993. He coached them in the North American Soccer League and later to dominance in the Major Indoor Soccer League. The club won eight MISL titles, including five straight from 1988 to 1992. He was elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1992.

Sid Rosenberg Gets WABC Sports Show

     Former South Florida sports host Sid Rosenberg will add a Sunday morning sports show on 77 WABC-AM in New York City on Septermber 9. He currently co-hosts the morning show with Bernard McGuirk on that station since April 2018. He joined WABC as a late-morning co-host in January 2016.
     Rosenberg made several stops during his 10-year stay in South Florida. He joined Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM in late 2005 as a fill-in host and later co-host middays with O.J. McDuffie. He was elevated to morning host spot in 2007 and held the post until May 2009.
     He moved on to Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM in August 2009 and became the midday host. Rosenberg was promoted to the afternoon shift in June 2010 and remained there until April 2012.
     His final stop prior to WABC was at 640 Sports WMEN-AM. He was the morning host on that station from August 2012 to December 2015.
     Rosenberg began his broadcasting career as a co-host with Scott Kaplan at CBS Sportsline in Fort Lauderdale during 1999 and 2000. The program was relocated to WNEW-FM in New York City and continued for one more year. Rosenberg was the morning sports anchor on Imus In The Morning at Sports Radio 66 WFAN-AM from 2000 until September 2005. He also co-host the midday shift on WFAN with Jody McDonald and later Joe Benigno from 2001 to September 2005. Rosenberg was the morning sports anchor on 1010 WINS-AM earlier this decade from December 2010 until January 2012.

Safid Deen New Dolphins Beat Reporter

     Safid Deen has joined the South Florida Sun-Sentinel as their new Miami Dolphins beat writer. He will share those duties with Omar Kelly and replaces Chris Perkins, who recently joined The Athletic Miami. 

     Deen has worked at the Orlando Sentinel for the last four years covering the Florida State University Seminoles athletic program. His game stories and columns on the Noles had appeared in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. 

Panthers Sign Troy Brouwer

     The Florida Panthers have agreed to a one-year deal with forward Troy Brouwer. He played the last two seasons with the Calgary Flames. Brouwer played 76 games as he compiled six goals and 16 assists with the team in 2017-18.
     Brouwer was drafted in 2004 and played with the Chicago Blackhawks when Florida Panthers president of hockey operations Dale Tallon was the general manager of that team. He helped the Blackhawks end a 49-year drought as the club won the Stanley Cup in 2010. Brouwer also had stints with the Washington Capitals and St. Louis Blues.

Braves Hold Marlins Scoreless

     The Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 4-0 at Marlins Park on Sunday. Both teams ended up splitting the four-game series.
     Miami(53-79) gave up the first run of the contest in the top of the sixth. Tyler Flowers drove in Nick Markakis on a single to left field.
     Atlanta(73-56) scored the rest of their runs in the eighth inning. They had the bases loaded when a throw by first baseman Derek Dietrich went to the backstop on a fielder's choice for Charlie Culberson and Flowers to score on the play. Ozzie Albies later crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Ender Inciarte.

Dwyer Pounds Park Vista

     The Dwyer Panthers shut out the Park Vista Cobras 40-0 at Blum Stadium on Saturday. Both schools are expected to contend from Palm Beach County for the postseason.
     Dwyer(1-0) scored the only touchdown in the first quarter. Running back Ernest Blackshear raced down the left sideline for a 78-yard score at the 7:00 mark.
     The Panthers extended their lead to 21-0 during the second quarter as they got into the end zone twice. Defensive back Colby Dempsey intercepted a ball from Park Vista(0-1) quarterback Tyler Thomas and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown at 4:55. Quarterback Gio Richardson, in his first game with Dwyer since he transferred from Oxbridge Academy, arched a 25-yard pass to the left corner of the end zone which wide receiver Nic Jennings caught with 1:20 left in the first half.
     The momentum stayed with Dwyer in the third quarter as they struck quickly. Cornerback Dequan Wilson picked off a pass and brought it back 32 yards for a score at 10:30.
     Richardson later threw a swing pass to running back James Meeks on the right side as he scored on a six-yard touchdown with 2:45 remaining in the third. Meeks also made his debut with the Panthers after helping Oxbridge Academy reach the FHSAA Class 3A state title game last season.
     Dwyer added a 72-yard touchdown pass on the second play of the fourth quarter to go up 40-0. A running clock was used for the rest of the contest.

Marlins Outscore Braves

     The Miami Marlins held off the Atlanta Braves 3-1 on Saturday night at Marlins Park. The Fish have won two straight games.
     Miami(53-78) scored their first run during the sixth inning. J.T. Realmuto hit a sacrifice fly to center field which brought home Rafael Ortega.
     The Marlins stretched their margin to 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh. Brian Anderson nailed a two-run homer to left field on a 3-2 pitch that also scored Miguel Rojas.
     Atlanta(72-56) made a late attempt to come back in the ninth inning. Dansby Swanson sent a solo home run over the left-field wall on a 2-2 count.

Marlins Move By Braves

     The Miami Marlins scored the only run in the contest as they beat the Atlanta Braves 1-0 at Marlins Park on Friday night. It ended a long string of losses recently by the Marlins against Atlanta(72-56).
     Miami(52-78) put up the only tally during the fourth inning. Derek Dietrich knocked in Brian Anderson on a single into center field.

University School Blasts Glades Central

     The University School Sharks smashed the Glades Central Raiders 35-6 at AutoNation Field on Friday night. Both teams met two times last season which included a Sharks 44-21 playoff victory in a Class 4A regional semifinal game.
     University School(1-0) was able to score twice in the first quarter. Quarterback Nick Vattiato found wide receiver Robert Floyd on the left side of the end zone on a 30-yard touchdown pass at 6:26. Running back Kenny McIntosh scored a two-point conversion on a shovel pass to make it 8-0. Vattiato then scored on their next possession as he scrambled around the right end and scored from three yards away at the 3:25 mark.
     The Sharks extended their lead to 21-0 at 7:22 of the second quarter. McIntosh ran toward the right sideline and got into the end zone from 10 yards out. University School made it a 28-point margin with 2:13 left in the first half. Wide receiver Zay Flowers caught a ball on the left hash marks from Vattiato and scored on a 27-yard reception.
     In the third quarter, the Raiders surrendered another touchdown at 5:43. Wide receiver Brandon Inniss received a pass in the middle of the field and pulled away from the secondary for a 28-yard score.
     There was a running clock implemented for the fourth quarter and Glades Central(0-1) finally scored to break the shutout. Running back Jaheim Humphries ran six yards, fumbled the ball into the end zone and it was recovered by Raiders wide receiver Ja'Vontae Williams with 8:35 remaining.

Palm Beach Central At Atlantic Preview

     The Palm Beach Central Broncos challenge the Atlantic Eagles on Sautrday at Atlantic Stadium in Delray Beach. Both schools are looked at being two of the top Class 8A squads in Palm Beach County.
     Palm Beach Central had their preseason kickoff classic game stopped with over eight minutes left in the fourth quarter and ahead of the Dwyer Panthers 5-3 due to a shooting on campus. The Broncos are led on defense by cornerback Akeem Dent.
     Atlantic made it to the FHSAA Class 8A championship game in Orlando last year and lost to Dr. Phillips 17-7. They settled for an 8-8 tie with the Miami Northwestern Bulls in the spring football game and last week were routed by the Miami Central Rockets 39-7. The Eagles lost a bulk of talent on offense due to graduation which included wide receiver Corey Gammage, quarterback Antoine Williams III, wide receiver Cadarius Gaskin, running back Shelley Singletary, running back Corey Cola Jr. and wide receiver Oyeh Lurry-Davis. The team emphasizes defense with returning defensive lineman Henry Bryant. Quarterback Kalani Ilimaleota leads the Eagles on offense.

Braves Blank Marlins

     The Atlanta Braves shut out the Miami Marlins 5-0 at Marlins Park on Thursday night. The Braves swept a four-game series against the Fish last week in Atlanta.
     Atlanta(72-55) chalked up two run in the second inning. Charlie Culberson homered to left field on the first pitch and Ozzie Albies scored in front of him.
     In the third inning, Ronald Acuna Jr. smashed a solo home run to left field on a 2-2 pitch to give the Braves a 3-0 lead.
     Miami(51-78) surrendered two more runs during the top of the fifth. Ender Inciarte connected with a solo homer to right field on a 3-1 count. Johan Camargo later drove in Freddie Freeman on a double into right.

Park Vista At Dwyer Preview

     The Dwyer Panthers host the Park Vista Cobras on Saturday at Blum Stadium in Palm Beach Gardens. Both schools are contending playoff teams for the upcoming 2018 season.
     Park Vista was to handle the Olympic Heights Lions 28-7 in a spring football game and beat Pahokee Blue Devils 12-8 last week in a preseason contest. They lost two of their better offensive players quarterback John Smith and wide receiver Atorian Perry to graduation. The Cobras look to put more emphasis on moving the football with a ground game of running backs Nick King and Joshua Jean. Quarterback Tyler Thomas got to take more snaps than expected last season and he will look at wide receivers Lucas Deininger,Mason Proch and Atlantic transfer Aydin Henningham for pass receptions.
     Dwyer dropped their spring football game 21-7 at Cardinal Gibbons against the Chiefs. They had their preseason kickoff classic game stopped last week with over eight minutes left in the fourth quarter and down 5-3 to the Palm Beach Central Broncos due to a shooting on campus. The Panthers bring a new outlook on offense as they picked up transfers quarterback Gio Richardson, running back James Meeks and wide receiver Antavious Lane from Class 3A state finalist Oxbridge Academy along with wide receiver Tanner Franklin from Palm Beach Lakes. They keep the same backfield from last year as Cedric Tucker, Bobby Armes and Reggie Gadsen will share the amount of carries in the rushing attack. Richardson can connect passes to wide receivers that include Lane, Franklin, Colby Dempsey, Nic Jennings and Nick Bingo.

Miami Central At Cardinal Gibbons Preview

     The Miami Central Rockets visit the Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs at Dr. Bud Tight Field, known as The Furnace, in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday night. Both teams finished their 2017 seasons with tough playoff losses to district rivals and the eventual state champions. The Chiefs were edged in triple overtime by the American Heritage Patriots 58-57 in a Class 4A regional final. The Rockets lost to the Miami Northwestern Bulls in a Class 6A regional semifinal 24-18.
     Miami Central went on the road and defeated Class 8A state finalist Atlantic 39-7 last week in a preseason kickoff classic. The Rockets offense is led by quarterback Maurice Underwood. Their rushing attempts will be split between running backs Lexington Joseph and Kejon Owens. The primary target for Underwood is expected to be wide receiver Anthony Colonel.
     Cardinal Gibbons held off the Dwyer Panhters 21-7 in a spring football game and traveled last week to Key West and topped the Conchs. The Chiefs return just about all of their offensive skill players to the squad. Nik Scalzo comes in at quarterback while they have a strong backfield with running backs Vincent Davis and Tajae Davis. Wide receivers Dimon Stewart, Dijon Senior, Nikolas Ognenovic, Chris Benestad and Jordan Freeman look to get open down the field for Scalzo.

Glades Central At University School Preview

     The Glades Central Raiders come down from The Muck as they challenge the University School Sharks on Friday night at AutoNation Field. Both schools met twice last season with the Sharks victorious in both contests. They included a season opening 13-7 win in Belle Glade and a 44-21 victory in a Class 4A regional semifinal at Davie to end the Raiders season.
     Glades Central slugged it out with the Deerfield Beach Bucks in a high scoring 44-21 loss during a spring game. The Raiders have Davius Richard at quarterback and running back Jaheim Humphries will get most of the rushing opportunities. Wide receivers Jymetre Hester, Odieu Hilaire and Ja'Vontae Williams are the primary wide receivers for receptions from Richard.
     University School reached all the way to the state semifinal game, fell on the road at Cocoa 49-14 and finished with a 9-2 mark in 2017. The Sharks return the majority of their starters on both sides of the ball. They are loaded in the backfield with Kenny McIntosh and Michael Hurt. Nick Vattiato made several starts last season and replaces George Bubrick as quarterback. The Sharks have four returning starters at the wide receiver spot with Joshua Sanguinetti, Zay Flowers, Christian Wells and Jordan Irizarry.

Deerfield Beach At Chaminade-Madonna Preview

     The defending FHSAA Class 3A state champion Chaminade-Madonna Lions will face the Deerfield Beach Bucks on Friday night in a battle between two of the top schools in Broward County. It will be the first time ever that the Lions play a night game on their campus at Vince Zappone Field.
     Deerfield Beach ended up with a 8-3 record last season and were upset at home by the Weston Wildcats 20-17 in a Class 8A regional quarterfinal. The team made it to the state semifinals in 2016.
     They put emphasis on their defense along with their ground game headed by running back Jaylan Knighton. Tyler Herring is at quarterback as he is expected to connect passes to wide receivers Deajaun McDougle, Dashaun Davis, Bryce Gowdy and DeRohn King downfield.
     Chaminade-Madonna finished with an 11-2 record last year and topped the Oxbridge Academy Thunderwolves 31-28 at the Class 3A state title game in Orlando on a last second 19-yard field goal by Daniel Longman.
     The Lions lost several offensive players to graduation which included Shaun Shivers, Zavier Williams and Akeem Hayes. They still have a fine passing attack with quarterback Daelen Menard and wide receiver John Dunmore, who returns to Chaminade-Madonna after spending the 2017 season with the American Heritage Stallions in Delray Beach.

Chris Perkins And Orlando Alzugaray Join The Athletic

     The Athletic Miami sports website was launched on Monday. Miami was one of the last large North American cities that The Athletic expanded to. Several local media members have already been brought in by that organization.
     Chris Perkins has left his position as the Miami Dolphins beat writer for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. He will continue as the afternoon co-host with Captain Curtis Stevenson on Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM.
      Perkins will cover the Miami Dolphins for The Athletic Miami along with Miami Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM midday host Orlando Alzugaray. Alzugaray will remain on WQAM and his weekend show at Mad Dog Radio on SiriusXM Radio.

Toast Rejoins WBGG-FM

     Toast has rejoined Big 105.9 WBGG-FM in an on-air capacity on Wednesday. He is now a part of the morning program on the Paul Castronovo Show. He had worked as a disc jockey at 104.3 The Shark WSFS-FM from October 2015 until February 2018.
     Toast once was a Miami sports talk host at several different radio stations. He was a weekend co-host with Stugotz, a.k.a. Jon Weiner, on Fox Sports Radio 940 WRFX-AM from 2003 to early 2004. Toast joined Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM in August 2004 as an evening co-host with Marc Eisenberg. He was promoted to early morning co-host alongside Steve Brancik in 2005. Toast would join Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM as the morning sports anchor and producer on the Kenny and Bo Show in 2006.
     He later was a fill-in host at 940 The Sports Animal WINZ-AM for several months in early 2010. Several years later, he co-hosted a weekend show on 640 Sports WMEN-AM with South Florida Sun-Sentinel sports columnist Dave Hyde from January 2013 until August 2013.

Marlins Beat Yankees

     The New York Yankees finished a two-game series with a 9-3 defeat to the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night at Marlins Park. Both clubs split the two-game series at Yankee Stadium back in April.
     New York(79-47) had to wait until the fourth inning to get on the scoreboard. Neil Walker lined a two-out double to deep right field off the glove of a diving Rafael Ortega for Aaron Hicks to score from first.
     The Yankees made it 2-0 in the top of the sixth. Brett Gardner was able to score on a sacrifice fly by Walker to center field.
     Miami(51-77) came up with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. Austin Dean reached base on an infield hit to short as Brian Anderson scored. Miguel Rojas followed with a three-run homer to left field on a 1-2 pitch. Former Yankee Starlin Castro and Dean scored in front of him on the play. Two batters later, Yadiel Rivera drove in Magneuris Sierra on a double to deep right-center field.
     The Bronx Bombers closed the gap during the seventh inning. Former Marlin Giancarlo Stanton got an infield hit to short for Luke Voit to score.
     The Marlins regained a three-run margin in the bottom of the frame. Derek Dietrich grounded into a fielder's choice for Anderson to cross the plate.
     The Fish added three additional runs in the eighth inning. Sierra led off with a single to center then J.T. Riddle came in to pinch-hit and sent a two-run home run to right-center field on the first pitch. Castro later sliced a single into right-center which brought in J.T. Realmuto.

Dave LaMont No Longer Bowling Voice

     Local sportscaster Dave LaMont is no longer the television play-by-play announcer of the Professional Bowlers Association Tour. Fox Sports recently picked up the television rights, which were held by ESPN, and have named Rob Stone as the new television voice of the PBA Tour. 

     LaMont began announcing bowling on ESPN in December 2016. He will continue as a morning sports contributor on the Paul Castronovo Show at Big 105.9 WBGG-FM and as a college football play-by-play announcer for ESPN.
     LaMont has over 35 years of broadcasting experience in the Miami market. He was the radio play-by-play voice of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the early 1980s and held a sportscaster position at 790 WNWS-AM.
     After a stint at News Radio 610 WIOD-AM and 940 WINZ-AM, he became a morning co-host with Jimmy Cefalo on The First Team at Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM in 1993. He later co-hosted the show with Joe Rose before he returned to WIOD in 1994.
     LaMont did his share of television work as a sideline reporter of Miami Heat games on Sunshine Network alongside Eric Reid and Jack Ramsey from October 1992 until April 2000. He was promoted to morning host on WIOD in the mid 2000s following over a decade as a morning sports anchor.
     He was named the first radio play-by-play announcer of Florida Atlantic University football when the program formed in 2001 and also handled announcing men's basketball. LaMont left both positions in the middle of 2011 for a full-time announcer spot at ESPN. He was replaced by Ken LaVicka as the new FAU radio voice. 

Jorge Sedano Moves To KSPN-AM Afternoons

     Former Miami sportscaster Jorge Sedano will move from the morning shift to the afternoon shift at KSPN-AM in Los Angeles on September 4. He has been with that station as a morning co-host alongside Keyshawn Johnson and LZ Granderson since September 2016.
     Sedano was a sports talk host in Miami for 13 years. He worked at 1700 The Fan WAFN-AM from 1999 to December 2000. It included a stint in the last six months as a sports host. He served as a sports host on Fox Sports Radio 940 WRFX-AM from 2002 until the station changed their format in July 2004. Sedano added duties as a morning sports anchor at News Radio 610 WIOD-AM, studio host of the Miami Heat Radio Network and an overnight host on Fox Sports Radio. He would leave Clear Channel Miami in July 2007.
     He joined Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM in August 2007 as a midday host. Sedano was elevated to the morning shift in April 2009 and stayed with that organization until April 2012. He was the program director and afternoon host at Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM from August 2012 to August 2013. He landed at ESPN Radio as an evening co-host with Mark Schlereth in September 2013. Sedano would work there until September 2016.

Marlins Fall To Yankees

     Giancarlo Stanton made his return to South Florida as the Miami Marlins lost to the New York Yankees 2-1 in 12 innings at Marlins Park on Tuesday night. It has been 15 years since both clubs met in the 2003 World Series which the Marlins prevailed.
     In the fourth inning, New York(79-46) got out in front 1-0. Neil Walker knocked in Miguel Andujar with a single into right-center field.
     Miami(50-77) evened up the contest in the fifth inning. Austin Dean smashed a solo home run to left-center field on the first pitch.
     The Yankees loaded the bases in the top of the 12th with one out. Andujar hit a sacrifice fly to left field for Kyle Higashioka to cross the plate.

Marlins Unload On Nationals

     The Miami Marlins smashed the Washington Nationals 12-1 on Sunday at Nationals Park. The Marlins won their last two road games after losing a franchise record 12 consecutive road contests.
     The Fish return home after going 2-5 on the road trip. They will host the New York Yankees in a rare two-game series between both clubs.
   

Marlins End Road Losing Streak

     The Miami Marlins topped the Washington Nationals 7-5 in 10 innings on Saturday night at Nationals Park. The Marlins snapped a franchise record 12-game losing streak on the road.

Dwyer And Palm Beach Central Game Suspended

     Two of the top state contenders from Palm Beach County met in a preseason kickoff classic at Wellington on Friday night as the Dwyer Panthers faced the Palm Beach Central Broncos. The game was stopped with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter when two people in front of the stands were shot. Palm Beach Central led Dwyer 5-3 at the time. The contest will not be continued at a later date.
     Palm Beach Central got all their scoring during the first half. They got a safety on a punt return that ended up in the Panthers end zone. The Broncos added a field goal in the final minute of the second quarter. Dwyer made a 27-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to close the gap.
     Top talent were represented by both schools. Former Oxbridge Academy standouts quarterback Gio Richardson and wide receiver Antavious Lane made their debuts with Dwyer. Broncos defensive back Akeem Dent is the most recognizable player for Palm Beach Central.

Nationals Slam Marlins

     The Washington Nationals handled the Miami Marlins 8-2 at Nationals Park on Friday night. The Fish have now lost 15 of their last 17 games.

Miami Central Routs Atlantic

     The Miami Central Rockets visited Delray Beach and pounded the Atlantic Eagles 39-7 in a preseason kickoff classic at Atlantic Stadium on Thursday night. The Eagles come off a FHSAA Class 8A state championship game appearance while the Rockets were eliminated in a regional semifinal against eventual Class 6A state champion Miami Northwestern last year.
     Miami Central scored early at the 8:11 mark in the first quarter. Quarterback Maurice Underwood found wide receiver Anthony Colonel in the front of the end zone from 30 yards away.
     Atlantic got their only lead in the contest 28 seconds into the second quarter. Running back Antonio Gonzalez got through the line and breezed by the secondary on a 75-yard touchdown run to make it 7-6.
     The Rockets answered back less than one minute later at 10:44. Running back Lexington Joseph went around the left end and scored from 15 yards out for a 12-7 lead. Joseph scored again rushing for one yard on a wildcat formation through the left side of the line with16 seconds remaining in the first half.
     The third quarter started well for Miami Central as they ended up in the end zone on their second play on offense at 7:40. Underwood connected a 79-yard pass to Colonel on the right hash marks and increased their lead to 26-7.
     In the fourth quarter, Rockets running back Kejon Owens added another score at the 7:19 mark as he sprinted down the left sideline from 19 yards away. Miami Central put in a one-yard touchdown run with 51.6 seconds left in game.

Marlins Continue Losing Streak To Braves

     The Miami Marlins were swept by the Atlanta Braves 5-2 on Wednesday night at SunTrust Park. The Fish extended their losing streak to five games and have prevailed in two of their last 16 games.
     Miami(48-75) did something they have not done in their last seven games and that was to get on the scoreboard first. Brian Anderson knocked in Rafael Ortega with a base hit into center field in the opening frame.
     The Marlins made it a two-run gap during the top of the fourth. Starlin Castro cracked a solo home run to right field on a 1-0 pitch.
     Atlanta(68-51) was able to surpass them in the bottom of the fourth. Charlie Culberson crossed the plate on a ground out to first by Ender Inciarte. Two batters later, Dansby Swanson smacked a two-run homer to center on a 1-0 pitch for a 3-2 margin.
     The Braves got more distance in the sixth inning with two more runs. Inciarte drove in Culberson with a single into center field. Swanson later lined a sacrifice fly to right-center field for Inciarte to go home.

Braves Swipe Marlins

     The Atlanta Braves outscored the Miami Marlins 10-6 on Tuesday night at SunTrust Park. The Marlins have lost 13 of their last 15 contests.

Rich Waltz Working Giants Road Trip

     Former Miami Marlins television voice Rich Waltz will be working as a play-by-play announcer on television and radio for the San Francisco Giants this weekend. The Giants are in Cincinnati this weekend and then play in New York against the Mets on Monday.
     Waltz was the Marlins television play-by-play announcer on Fox Sports Florida from 2005 until 2017. He was replaced by Paul Severino for the 2018 season. Waltz has worked baseball games on MLB Network and Facebook broadcasts this year.

Marlins Lose Doubleheader To Braves

     The Atlanta Braves got their second victory of the day and beat the Miami Marlins 6-1 on Monday night at SunTrust Park. The Braves took the first game over the Fish in the doubleheader 9-1.
     In the first inning, Atlanta(66-51) broke out to a 2-0 lead. Ronald Acuna Jr. crushed a solo home run to center field on the first pitch. He happened to do the same thing in the earlier game on the first Bravos at-bat. Johan Camargo later singled into left to score Ozzie Albies.
     They stretched it to a three-run margin in the bottom of the fifth. Freddie Freeman knocked in Acuna with a base hit to right field.
     Miami(48-73) captured their only run of the contest in the sixth inning. Starlin Castro singled into left field which scored J.T. Realmuto.
     The Braves responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Camargo scored on a Mike Foltynewicz single to right. Acuna then drove in Dansby Swanson with a base hit into right field. Freeman finished the scoring with a solo homer to right field on a 1-1 count during the seventh inning.

Braves Pull Away From Marlins

     The Miami Marlins fell to the Atlanta Braves 9-1 at SunTrust Park on Monday. It was the first game of a doubleheader between both clubs.
     Atlanta(65-51) scored on their first at-bat of the contest. Ronald Acuna Jr. bashes a solo home run to right-center field on a 3-1 pitch.
     In the second inning, Miami(48-72) tied it 1-1. Derek Dietrich scored on a base hit by Isaac Galloway into deep right-center field.
     The Marlins lost the lead in the next inning. Johan Camargo knocked in Nick Markakis on a double to left field. Atlanta added another run in the fifth when Freddie Freeman hit a sacrifice fly to left and Ocuna crossed the plate.
     The Braves compiled five more runs in the sixth inning. Charlie Culberson doubled to the warning track in center field which scored Camargo. After Adam Duvall walked to load the bases, Ocuna followed with a double to left-center field as Kurt Suzuki and Culberson scored. Ozzie Albies then lined a single into center field to score Duvall and Ocuna scored.
     Atlanta loaded the bases again during the eighth inning with one out. Acuna smashed the ball to the center-field wall where it bounced off the glove of Galloway for a long single. Suzuki was able to score on the play.

Mets Zip By Marlins

     The New York Mets got by the Miami Marlins 4-3 at Marlins Park on Sunday. The Marlins have lost 10 of their last 12 games.
     Both clubs scored in the first inning. The Mets got a Wilmer Flores sacrifice fly to center that scored Amed Rosario. The Fish tied it up at 1-1 when Starlin Castro brought in Rafael Ortega on a single to left field.
     New York(49-66) pulled ahead in the top of the second. Jose Reyes smacked a two-run homer to left field on a 1-2 count that brought in Jose Bautista.
     Miami(48-71) put up a run during the fourth inning. Bryan Holaday knocked in Derek Dietirch with a base hit into left.
     In the sixth inning, Michael Conforto gave the Mets a 4-2 margin as he lifted a solo home run to right field on a 1-2 count. The Marlins answered in the bottom of the frame as Martin Prado scored on a Holaday single to center field.

Marlins Finish Mets

     The Miami Marlins needed 11 innings to defeat the New York Mets 4-3 on Saturday night at Marlins Park. The Fish have won two of their last 11 games.
     New York(48-66) got all their three runs on just one play during the top of the fourth. Todd Frazier doubled to left field and brought in Wilmer Flores. Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo.
     The Marlins began to chip at the lead in the bottom of the frame. Martin Prado drove in Brian Anderson and Derek Dietrich with a base hit into right field.
     Miami(48-70) tied it up 3-3 in the fifth inning. J.T. Realmuto singled to center which scored Magneuris Sierra.
     The Fish broke the tie in the 11th. Bryan Holaday knocked in Miguel Rojas on a double into left field.

Mets Trounce Marlins

     The New York Mets stayed on top of the Miami Marlins 6-2 at Marlins Park on Friday night. The Marlins have fallen in nine of their last 10 games and dropped to three games behind the Mets for fourth place in the National League East.

Marlins Trade Justin Bour

     The Miami Marlins have traded first baseman Justin Bour to the Philadelphia Phillies for minor league pitcher McKenzie Mills. Bour had 19 home runs and 54 runs batted in during 112 games with the Marlins this season. 

     Bour had his best season last year with the Fish. He compiled 25 home runs, 83 runs batted in and a .289 batting average with Miami in 108 games. He participated in the annual All-Star Game home run derby held at Marlins Park. 

Steve Gorten Leaves Columbus Dispatch

     Steve Gorten has left his position as the Columbus Blue Jackets beat reporter at the Columbus Dispatch. He shared duties covering the club along with longtime Miami Herald Florida Panthers beat writer George Richards.
     Gorten joined the South Florida Sun-Sentinel in 2002 as a high school sports reporter. He replaced Michael Russo as the Florida Panthers beat reporter for the newspaper in September 2005. He was elevated to cover the University of Miami Hurricanes athletic program at the start of this decade. Gorten left the Sun-Sentinel in 2015 due to organizational job cuts.

Buccaneers Escape Dolphins

     The Tampa Bay Buccaneers got a 26-24 victory over the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium on Thursday night. It was the first of four preseason games for the Fins. The Dolphins have not played a contest since they lost to the Buffalo Bills on December 31 to end the 2017 regular season.

West Palm Beach Ratings July 2018

     The July ratings for the West Palm Beach market were released and the sports talk radio scene has become more competitive. One of the main competitors in the region ESPN West Palm 106.3 WUUB-FM are not involved with any ratings service.
     640 The Hurricane WMEN-AM rocketed up from a 0.5 to a 0.8 during the month. The combination of the New York Yankees Radio Network at night and Kevin's Other Show in afternoons has given them their best ratings since November 2016.
     1230 The Zone WBZT-AM dropped from a 0.1 to a 0.0 in the period. The station celebrated their one-year anniversary on July 31 and had only seen a positive bump just twice in August 2017 and June 2018.

Matt Lincoln Moving To News Anchor

     WPEC-TV CBS 12 West Palm Beach sports director and sports anchor Matt Lincoln is shifting to morning news anchor at the station as of August 13. John Everson will become the weekday sports anchor.
     Lincoln came to South Florida in March 2013 and replaced longtime Channel 12 sports anchor Pat Murphy. He once worked at WWBT-TV and WRLH-TV in Richmond, Virginia as a sportscaster.

Marlins Drop Game To Cardinals

     The Miami Marlins were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1 at Marlins Park on Wednesday night. The Fish have lost eight of their last nine contests.
     St. Louis(60-55) moved out in front during the top of the first. Yadier Molina blasted a solo home run to left field on a 0-1 pitch for his 15th homer of the year.
     In the second inning, Miami(47-69) tied it up at 1-1. Miguel Rojas lined a base hit to shallow left-center field which brought home Starlin Castro.
     The Cardinals regained the lead in the six inning. Matt Carpenter nailed a solo homer to right field on a 3-1 count. Carpenter hit a home run against the Fish for the second straight game and collected his 31st homer of the season. Three batters later, former Marlin Marcell Ozuna sliced a double near the left-field corner for Jose Martinez to score.
     The Redbirds piled on the runs in the final two innings. Paul DeJong doubled to deep left field in the eighth inning which scored pinch-runner Harrison Bader and Ozuna.
     The Cards added on two more runs in the top of the ninth to make it 7-1. Molina knocked in Kolten Wong along with Carpenter with a double into right field.

Dolphins Training Facility Heading To Miami

     The Miami Dolphins announced on Tuesday that their training facility will be moving to Miami Gardens. It will be located just west of their home venue Hard Rock Stadium. It is expected to be completed within the next two years.
     The Dolphins training facility is currently located at Nova Southeastern University in Davie and has been there since July 1993. The Fins training facility was at St. Thomas University in Miami from July 1970 until June 1993.

Cardinals Surge By Marlins

     The St. Louis Cardinals overcame the Miami Marlins 3-2 on Tuesday night at Marlins Park. The Fish have fallen in seven of their last eight games.
     Miami(47-68) broke out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Justin Bour knocked in Derek Dietrich with a single into center field.
     The Marlins made it a two-run gap during the bottom of the fifth. Miguel Rojas singled to left field for J.T. Riddle to score.
     St. Louis(59-55) bounced back in the seventh to tie the contest. Paul DeJong cracked a two-run homer to left field on a 0-1 count which brought in Jedd Gyorko.
     The Cardinals took their first lead in the top of the eighth. Matt Carpenter came up and ripped a solo home run to right field on a 3-2 pitch.

Miami Ratings July 2018

     There was a new leader among sports talk radio stations in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale region. WQAM returned on top alone for the first time since last December during the Miami Dolphins regular season.
     Miami Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM rose from a 0.8 to a 0.9 in July. They did do a special broadcast from the NHL Draft in Dallas.
     Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM dropped from a 0.8 to a 0.7 in the period. The Ticket was ahead or tied for the top spot in the market since January.
     Miami Sports 940 WINZ-AM stayed at a 0.3 for the fifth consecutive month. It will be the last complete period that Andy Slater worked as the mid-afternoon host on the station.

Marlins Slide By Cardinals

     It was the return of Marcell Ozuna to South Florida as the Miami Marlins beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 at Marlins Park on Monday night. The Marlins were able to snap a six-game losing streak with the victory.
     Miami(47-67) jumped on the Redbirds in the first inning and scored their first run with none out. Derek Dietrich hit a lead-off double and then scored on a Brian Anderson soft base hit through the right side of the infield.
     The Marlins took a 2-0 lead during the bottom of the fourth. Starlin Castro smacked a solo home run to left field on a 1-0 pitch for his ninth homer of the season.
     St. Louis(58-55) broke the shutout in the ninth inning. Matt Carpenter walked with the bases loaded and one out for Paul DeJong to cross the plate. Yadier Molina grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

Phillies Sweep Marlins

     The Miami Marlins were swept by the Philadelphia Phillies as they lost 5-3 at Citizens Bank Park on Sunday. The Marlins finished the road trip winless with a 0-6 record.
     Philadelphia(63-48) would break up to a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning. Odubel Herrera hit a single into left field for Cesar Hernandez and Nick Williams to score. Maikel Franco followed with a single to left which brought in Carlos Santana.
     Miami(46-67) answered back quickly in the top of the seventh. Derek Dietrich connected with a two-run homer to right field on the first pitch. Three batters later, Justin Bour blasted a solo home run to center on a 1-1 count to tie it up 3-3.
     New Phillies acquisition Asdrubal Cabrera knocked a two-run homer over the right-field wall on 2-0 pitch which scored Williams. It was the second straight game that Cabrera hit a home run against the Fish.

Phillies Outdistance Marlins

     The Philadelphia Phillies stopped the Miami Marlins 8-3 at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday night. The Marlins have lost five straight and seven of their last nine games. The Phils look to sweep the four-game series between both clubs on Sunday.

Phillies Hold Off Marlins

     The Miami Marlins fell to the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1 on Friday night at Citizens Bank Park. The Fish have won three of their last 11 games.
     The Phillies scored first during the bottom of the third. Rhys Hoskins knocked in Vince Velasquez on a base hit into center field. Cesar Hernandez would score on a wild pitch with Odubel Herrera at-bat in the seventh inning.
     Miami(46-65) compiled their only tally in the top of the eighth. Brian Anderson drove in Magneuris Sierra with a single to center.
     Philadelphia(61-48) added some runs in the bottom of the frame. Jorge Alfaro singled to center field for Maikel Franco to score. Two batters later, pinch-hitter Roman Quinn hit a double to the base of the left-center fence which caused Nick Williams and Alfaro to cross the plate.

Orlando Franklin Joins Denver Radio Station

     Former local high school and college football player Orlando Franklin has joined Sports Radio 104.3 The Fan KKFN-FM as a Sunday morning host. He retired from the National Football League earlier this year in May.
     Franklin played high school football with the Atlantic Eagles. They were eliminated three consecutive years in the FHSAA Class 5A playoffs by St. Thomas Aquinas from 2004 to 2006. He was involved in the final game ever held at Hilltopper Stadium in 2005 when they lost to the Raiders.
     He then attended the University of Miami and was an offensive lineman for the Hurricanes. Franklin was with the Canes from 2007 to 2010 and played 51 games.
     Franklin was selected in the second round by the Denver Broncos in the 2011 NFL Draft. He helped the Broncos win the 2013 AFC Championship and lost Super Bowl 48 to the Seattle Seahawks.
     After four seasons with Denver, he signed with the San Diego Chargers in 2015 and stayed there for two years. He played his final season in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints and Washington Redskins in 2017.

Phillies Jump By Marlins

     The Philadelphia Phillies pulled off a ninth-inning rally to beat the Miami Marlins 5-2 at Citizens Bank Park on Thursday night. It was the first game of a four-game series between both clubs.
     Miami(46-64) roared out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Justin Bour walloped a two-run homer to right field on a 3-2 pitch which had J.T. Realmuto score in front of him.
     Philadelphia(60-48) earned their first run during the sixth. Rhys Hoskins socked a solo home run to left field on a 0-1 count.
     In the ninth inning, the Phillies fought and overtook the Marlins. With one out and the bases loaded for the Phils, Nick Williams grounded out to short and Jeff Kingery scored on the play. Maikel Franco came up next and powered a three-run homer barely over the left-field wall on a 2-0 pitch to give them the victory.
