Two of the top ten high school football programs in the United States will meet in the regular season opener on Friday night as the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders face the defending FHSAA Class 5A state champions American Heritage Patriots at Sun Life Stadium. The Raiders defeated Dillard 31-7 last week in a preseason kickoff classic while the Patriots handled Dwyer 49-23 in a game televised on ESPN.
St. Thomas Aquinas comes off a season in which they lost on the road in a regional final to the eventual Class 7A champion Dwyer Panthers. They enter this contest with a well-rounded offense. Jake Rizzo returns as quarterback and will look to connect with wide receivers Devante Peete, Sam Bruce and Jawuan Harris downfield. Running back Jordan Scarlett will get most of the carries from the backfield along with Deltron Sands and Khambrel St. Hubert also contributing.
American Heritage hit the pinnacle last year and won their first football state title over Clay 66-8. Quarterback Torrance Gibson leads the team on offense as he can throw the ball to anywhere on the field and run out of the pocket. He will have numerous wide receivers to throw to that include Janarvis Pough, Brandon Johnson, Dredrick Snelson and Blair Barrow. Running backs Kyshaun Bryan and Travis Jackson expect to split the load on handoffs.
