The Florida Panthers held on to defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 on Thursday night at BB&T Center and snapped a five-game losing streak. The Cats finished their five-game homestand with a 1-3-1 record and will play the next three games in the New York metropolitan area. They had not beaten the Blue Jackets since November 2007, a string of ten consecutive games.
It was not until the second period when one of the squads scored. Columbus(21-23-3) got a goal at 1:08 when Cam Atkinson set things up with a pass from the left wing to Jack Johnson at the top of the zone for a slapshot.
It took a short time for Florida(21-15-10) to respond as they put in a tally at 2:49 to tie the game. Aleksander Barkov had the puck on the end wall and slid it to Brad Boyes who then passed it to Jonathan Huberdeau in the low slot. He scored on a backhand shot for his ninth goal of the season. Barkov collected at least a point in six of the last seven games he has played.
The Panthers took there first lead of the game at 11:36. Aaron Ekblad and Brian Campbell passed the puck back and forth until Ekblad blasted a slapshot from the right point that hit the inside top part of the Blue Jackets cage for his seventh goal in his rookie campaign.
The Blue Jackets evened the contest at 2-2 with 1:26 remaining in the second. Artem Anisimov was at the right side of the net when his attempt to stuff in the puck popped up in the air. Alexander Wennberg was on the edge of the blue paint and batted it into the Panthers net for his second career NHL goal.
The Cats pulled ahead 3-2 as they scored with 6:52 left in the third period. Dmitry Kulikov snapped a shot from the left point which was redirected in by Sean Bergenheim in the low slot area.
