The Doral Academy Firebirds take a long trip up I-95 to Palm Beach Gardens and face the Dwyer Panthers at Blum Stadium in a Class 7A regional semifinal on Friday night. This is the first meeting between both schools. The winner of this game takes on St. Thomas Aquinas or West Broward in the next round.
Doral Academy(9-2) make their second postseason appearance in school history. After an season opening loss to Champagnat Catholic, they won six straight games until they fell to Chaminade-Madonna. The Firebirds advanced following a 36-26 victory over Nova last week in a regional quarterfinal. They have outscored their opponents 432-147 this year and averaged 39 points per game.
The Firebirds have an explosive passing game with wide receivers Brieon Fuller and Natavious Payne catching passes from quarterback Myles Hayes. Running back Shemar Paul will get the majority of the carries from the backfield.
Dwyer(8-2) have constantly made the FHSAA playoffs in the past decade with the exception in 2014. The Panthers have won their last six consecutive games entering this contest. They topped Mater Academy 43-13 in a regional quarterfinal last week. They have outscored opponents 174-38 in their last six games.
The Panthers have many options in their backfield this season which includes running backs Reggie Gasden, Cedric Tucker, Justin Birchette and Bobby Armes. Quarterback Trevor Omans will look for wide receivers Derrick Smith, Cephus Smith, Rudy Antoine, Andrew Kasten and Zephanijah Fletcher for pass completions.
