The Anaheim Ducks defeated the Florida Panthers 3-2 in a shootout at Amerant Bank Arena on Tuesday night. It was the first time that the Ducks head coach Joel Quinneville returned to Sunrise since his coaching stint ended with the Panthers in October 2021.
The Panthers participated in overtime and a shootout for the first time in the regular season. All 32 NHL clubs played on the same day for the only time this season.
After no scoring during the first frame, Anaheim(5-3-1) moved ahead 1-0 on a shorthanded goal at 9:57 of the second period. Leo Carlsson made a drop pass at the top of the zone. Troy Terry then angled a pass from the top left circle. Carlsson snapped a shot from the inner right circle past Daniil Tarasov for his fourth goal of the season.
The Ducks made it 2-0 on a 5-on-3 power-play goal with 7:33 remaining in the second. Carlsson zipped a cross-ice pass from above the right circle. LaCombe sent a diagonal pass from the top left circle and Cutter Gauthier took a one-time slap shot from the low right circle for his sixth tally of the campaign.
Florida(5-5-1) cut it to 2-1 with 8:48 left in the third period. Eetu Luostatinen backhanded a pass from the left corner and Mackie Samoskevich made a backhand pass from the left goal line. Anton Lundell placed a wrist shot from the right of the crease by Lukas Dostal for his third goal of the season.
The Panthers pulled their goalie for an extra attacker with 3:14 to go in the period. They tied it up 2-2 with 3:06 left in the third. Lundell won a faceoff in the left circle. Carter Verhaeghe fed a pass from the top of the zone. Seth Jones released a shot from the right point and Sam Reinhart redirected it in from the top of the crease for his fifth goal in 2025-26.
In the shootout, neither team converted in the first round. Terry lost the puck on a deke and it slipped into the cage on the Ducks second attempt. Lundell matched for the Cats with a wrist shot. Anaheim picked up the win as Mason McTavish put in a forehand shot.
