Cardinal Gibbons Finally Beats American Heritage

The Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs at last got a win over the American Heritage Patriots 24-14 at Heritage Field in Plantation on Friday night. The Chiefs stopped an 11-game losing streak to the Patriots, which did include a triple overtime loss in a regional final last year. Both schools have been District 16 rivals in Class 5A for the past six years.
Cardinal Gibbons(5-2, 3-0) got up early in the first quarter at 10:15. Nik Scalzo tossed a 10-yard pass to the back right corner of the end zone to wide receiver Troy Stellato.
The Patriots, after the ensuing kickoff, fumbled the ball away on the first play of their drive at their own 17-yard line. Several plays later, running back Tajae Davis punched the ball up the middle and scored from one yard away at the 8:54 mark for a 14-0 lead.
American Heritage(5-2, 2-1) chalked up a score with 33 seconds left in the first. Quarterback Edwin Rhodes connected a 38-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Douglas Emilien.
The Patriots would tie the contest 14-14 with 5:58 remaining in the second quarter. Running back Lavelton Williams rushed through the right side of the line and scored from 12 yards out.
In the third quarter, the Chiefs regained the lead. Daton Montiel kicked a 25-yard field goal with 2:12 to go for a three-point margin.
American Heritage had one more scoring opportunity in the final minute of the game deep in Cardinal Gibbons territory. Rhodes threw a pass to the left side which was tipped and Chiefs defensive back Sidney Porter returned it 74 yards for a touchdown with 23 seconds left.
