The Florida Panthers opened up their 25th season in the National Hockey League and fell to the  defending Atlantic Division champion Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 in a shootout at Amalie Arena on Saturday night.
Florida(0-0-1) moved out to a 1-0 lead at 5:58 of the first period. Vincent Trocheck carried the puck down the right side to the goal line. He sent a pass to the left-circle dot where Jonathan Huberdeau stopped it and Jacob MacDonald scored his first goal of the his NHL career. MacDonald, a Cornell University grad, made his National Hockey League debut in the contest.
Roberto Luongo left the game due to an injury with 7:39 left in the second period and he was replaced in net by James Reimer. Neither club was able to score in the second.
In the third period, Tampa Bay(1-0-0) compiled a shorthanded goal with 9:15 left. Ryan McDonagh made a long lead pass up the right-wing boards to Anthony Cirelli at the red line. He came in on a 2-on-1 attack, tried a cross-ice pass through the slot that the puck returned to him and put in a shot from the low right circle.
In the shootout, J.T. Miller flipped the puck over the right shoulder of Reimer on the Bolts first attempt. Mike Hoffman, in his first game with the Panthers, followed and hit the left goalpost. Both Brayden Point and Aleksander Barkov missed in the second round. Nikita Kucherov scored on a wrist shot by Reimer's left glove and gave Tampa Bay the victory.
