Flames Overcome Panthers

The Florida Panthers could not hold a two-goal lead and lost to the Calgary Flames 4-3 on Friday night at Scotiabank Saddledome. The winless streak for the Panthers extended to five games. The Flames continue to lead the Western Conference with 62 points.
The Panthers got ahead 1-0 at 6:18 of the first period. Mike Hoffman got an unassisted tally by David Rittich for his 21st goal of the campaign.
In the second period, Florida(17-18-8) made it 2-0 just 20 seconds into the frame. Jonathan Huberdeau scored a power-play goal from the left circle off a long cross-ice pass through the neutral zone by Keith Yandle.
Calgary(29-13-4) cut the deficit at the 10:14 mark. Mikael Backlund sent the puck toward the net and former Panther Michael Frolik tapped it in for his 11th goal.
The Flames tied the contest 2-2 with 4:50 left in the second. Mark Giordano snapped a shot past Roberto Luongo from the top left circle after a feed from Frolik in the top right circle.
It would be a third unanswered goal for Calgary at 8:29 of the third period. A soft backhand pass by Huberdeau at the top of the Panthers zone was picked up by Frolik and he connected a pass from the right point to Matthew Tkachuk alone in the slot. He put a slap shot into the Cats cage for his 21st goal of the season.
The Panthers pulled the goalie while they were shorthanded with 1:40 to go. It would not work as Sean Monahan scored a power-play goal into an empty net from the high slot with 1:27 remaining.
Florida again added an extra attacker and this time they scored. Evgenii Dadonov stuffed in a shot from the right side of the crease with 20.4 seconds left.
