George Richards Out At The Athletic Miami

The Athletic has decided to make job cuts in their organization. The Athletic Miami was affected as Florida Panthers beat reporter George Richards, Miami Dolphins beat writer Chris Perkins and Miami Heat beat reporter Andre Fernandez were let go.
Richards has covered the Florida Panthers for a very long time. He took over the Miami Herald hockey beat from original writer David J. Neal while the National Hockey League was in a lockout in 2005. Richards held the position until the newspaper decided not to report the Panthers on a daily basis in September 2017.
He left the Miami Herald and joined the Columbus Dispatch in October 2017 and became the Columbus Blue Jackets beat writer along with former South Florida Sun-Sentinel Florida Panthers writer Steve Gorten. Richards returned to South Florida and became the Panthers beat writer for The Athletic Miami in September 2018.
Richards, a Cooper City High School and University of Miami grad, started as an aget clerk at the Miami Herald in 1989. He became a sports writer with the newspaper in 1992.
