Panthers Top Flyers In Home Opener

The Florida Panthers introduced their 2022 President's Trophy and Atlantic Division championship banners as they defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 at FLA Live Arena on Wednesday night. It was the Panthers home opener after starting their first three games of the 2022-23 NHL campaign on the road.
Florida(3-1-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 6:06 mark of the first period. Aleksander Barkov passed the puck from behind the cage. Carter Verhaeghe sailed a wrist shot from the right-circle dot past Felix Sandstrom for his first tally of the year. Radko Gudas was credited was an assist against his former team.
Philadelphia(3-1-0) thought they tied it up 1-1 less than a minute later at 7:04 as Travis Konecny fired a snap shot from the high slot. It was negated due to them being offside entering the Florida defensive zone.
It became a 2-0 lead for the Cats at 8:37 of the period. Gustav Forsling sent a lead diagonal pass from his own zone to Verhaeghe at the red line. He skated in alone on a breakaway and scored his second goal of the contest from the slot area. Barkov picked up his second assist of the game on the play.
The Flyers closed it to 2-1 with 3:27 remaining in the first. Zack MacEwen put the puck across to Kevin Hayes on the left goal line. He centered it and Nick Seeler backhanded it in from the top of the crease for his first goal of the 2022-23 campaign.
In the second period, Philadelphia scored a power-play goal with 4:44 left and evened it 2-2. The Flyers released a shot from the top of the zone and Konecny along with Joel Farabee tried to put in the rebounds in the crease area. James van Riemsdyk collected it in the low slot and slide it in. van Riemsdyk has scored with the man advantage in two straight games.
The Panthers regained the lead 3-2 at the 3:51 mark of the third period. Matthew Tkachuk connected a pass to Sam Bennett red line. He advanced the puck to the top left circle and Rudolfs Balcers lifted a high backhand shot from the crease for his first goal in a Florida jersey.
The Cats increased to a two-goal margin at 9:08. Josh Mahura streaked down the left side of the ice and powered in a slap shot from the left wing for his first tally with the Panthers. Bennett and Tkachuk both chalked up their second assists each in the contest.
