Panthers Escape Sharks

The Florida Panthers topped the San Jose Sharks 4-1 on Thursday night at FLA Live Arena. The Panthers won three straight games for the first time this season and will complete their three-game homestand versus the Stanley Cup champions the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday. The Sharks are in a stretch in which they are away from home for 27 days.
Some Panthers players got some new milestone marks. Eric Staal picked up his 450th career goal while Sergei Bobrovsky chalked up his 350th career win to become the 25th NHL goalie to accomplish that feat.
San Jose(16-26-11) scored to make it 1-0 at the 5:49 mark. Erik Karlsson fired a slap shot from the top of the zone which was saved by Bobrovsky. Alexander Barabanov backhanded a shot from the slot area for his eighth goal of the campaign. Karlsson became the fourth defenseman in NHL history to have 70 points in 53 games or less in a regular season.
Florida(26-22-6) evened it up 1-1 at 4:30 of the second period. Marc Staal fed a pass from the neutral zone. Sam Reinhart skated slowly into the Sharks zone and then snapped a shot from the right-circle dot by Kaapo Kahkonen for his 18th goal this season. It was Staal's sixth assist of the year.
The Panthers took their first lead 2-1 with 40.2 seconds left in the second. Anton Lundell sent a cross-ice pass from the left wing and Eetu Luostarinen angled a pass from the right circle while falling down. Reinhart redirected the puck into the cage from the top of the crease for his second tally of the contest and 19th goal of the season.
In the third period, Aaron Ekblad was called for a four-minute, double-minor penalty with 4:51 to go. The Sharks pulled their goalie for an extra attacker with 2:15 remaining.
Eric Staal scored a shorthanded goal into an empty net off a lead pass from Luostarinen with 1:30 left for a Florida 3-2 lead. Staal added another shorthanded tally with 1:05 remaining for his second goal of the game to give the Cats a three-goal margin.
He became the fourth player in Florida Panthers franchise history with two shorthanded goals in one game. It was done by Tom Fitzgerald on October 13, 1995, Radek Dvorak on December 12, 1997 and Olli Jokinen on November 19, 2002.
