The Mustangs attempted to win their second state title in school history. Both high schools met in the state finals back in 2018.
Columbus(13-2) scored on their first possession at the 8:04 mark. Linebacker Hector Chavez was brought in and sneaked the ball up the middle on a shotgun formation from two yards away for a 7-0 lead.
The Explorers expanded it to a 14-point margin with 5:22 left in the first. Running back Agyeman Addae raced through the right side of the line, bounced off a defender and scored on a 10-yard touchdown run.
Mandarin(11-4) answered back on their next drive with 1:09 to go in the quarter and were down 14-6. Quarterback Tramell Jones found wide receiver Jaime Ffrench Jr. on a 15-yard touchdown pass in the back right corner of the end zone.
In the second quarter, Columbus increased the lead to 21-6 at 10:18. Running back Edward Bandy rushed up the middle from six yards out for the score.
The Mustangs cut it to 21-13 with 33 seconds remaining in the second. On a fourth-and-one play, running back Tiant Wyche broke a tackle and angled left to reach the end zone on a 21-yard touchdown run.
It became 28-13 lead for Columbus at the 8:32 mark of the third quarter. Bandy busted through the middle from two yards away for his second touchdown of the contest.
Mandarin responded with a touchdown at 6:34 and trailed 28-19. Jones fired a 30-yard touchdown pass to Ffrench on the right sideline.
The Explorers made it 35-19 just 19 seconds into the fourth quarter. Quarterback Alberto Mendoza threw a 25-yard strike to Bryce Fitzgerald on the right hash marks. Robert Czeremcha booted a 37-yard field goal with 8:54 left to give them a 38-19 lead.
