The Florida Panthers will open up their 2024-25 preseason schedule on Sunday at Amerant Bank Arena. The Cats will play in their annual doubleheader against the Nashville Predators. It is the first time the Panthers have played a competitive game in Sunrise since they won Game 7 versus the Edmonton Oilers and captured the Stanley Cup back in June.
The tradition of the Panthers preseason doubleheader began on September 19, 2011 when they hosted the Predators. There were three times that the doubleheader was not played annually. The NHL Lockout stopped it in 2012, there was no doubleheader scheduled in 2014 and the COVID-19 pandemic prevented it in 2020.
Prior to 2011, regular season doubleheaders were held in the National Hockey League. The New York Rangers and the New York Americans played them at Madison Square Garden from 1926 to 1942. The Montreal Canadiens and the Montreal Maroons had them at the Montreal Forum from 1926 until 1938.
