The Marlins will finish their 2024 campaign at the Toronto Blue Jays beginning tomorrow. The Twins, who are three games behind the Kansas City Royals and the Detroit Tigers for the final American League Wild-Card spot with three contests remaining in the regular season, will host the Baltimore Orioles this weekend.
In the first inning, the Marlins leaped out to a 1-0 lead. Jake Burger knocked in Xavier Edwards with a double off the left-center field fence.
Miami(59-100) expanded to a four-run margin with three runs during the top of the fifth. Otto Lopez scored on an Edwards base hit into left field. Two batters later, Burger singled through the left side and Nick Fortes crossed the plate. Jonah Bride later grounded into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded for Edwards to score.
Minnesota(82-77) broke the shutout in the bottom of the sixth. Carlos Correa connected with a solo home run to left field on a 1-1 pitch for his 14th homer of the season.
The Twins closed it to 4-2 in the seventh inning. Byron Buxton got to first on a throwing error and Ryan Jeffers reached home.
They tied it up 4-4 during the bottom of the eighth. Brooks Lee drove in Royce Lewis and Carlos Santana on a double off the right-field wall.
The Fish regained the lead 5-4 in the top of the 10th. Bride hit a sacrifice fly to left-center field and Griffin Conine scored.
Minnesota responded with a run in the bottom of the 10th. Willi Castro got a sacrifice fly to the warning track in center field and Lewis touched home.
In the top of the 13th, the Marlins reclaimed the lead with three runs to make it 8-5. Lopez doubled into left field for Dane Myers to score. Four batters later, Conine singled into shallow center field which scored Lopez and Edwards.
The Twins tacked on one run in the bottom of the 13th and fell short. Castro scored when Buxton grounded out to short.
